Samsung Electronics is all set to take the first steps into the era of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) as the firm establishes a dedicated R&D unit.

In 2023, we saw the generative AI trend take tremendous traction, mainly because of how the technology offered to "visualize" concepts by merely a prompt. However, as we progress into the future, it seems like AGI will be the next big thing. It enables AI models to understand and interpret knowledge and exert it according to user desires. Firms like Meta have already declared their intentions to establish a dominant spot in the AGI race, and it seems like Samsung won't be left behind, as the Korean giant forms an AGI Computing Lab, led by Dr. Woo Dong-hyuk, former developer Google Tensor.

Samsung has planned to create a "dedicated" AGI semiconductor lineup to meet the industry's requirements, especially for LLMs that revolve around technology. The Korean giant plans for an extensive R&D plan on AGI chips, claiming that they will continuously release new versions, depending upon how the markets are involved. Here is what the president of Samsung Electronics Device Solutions Division, Kyung Kye-Hyun, had to say:

I am pleased to announce the establishment of Samsung Semiconductor’s AGI Computing Labs in both the United States and Korea.” AGI refers to artificial intelligence with capabilities equal to or surpassing that of humans. We will create a completely new type of semiconductor specifically designed to meet the astonishing processing requirements of future AGI.

AGI is the next "gold rush" in the AI markets, and Samsung has positioned itself early to capitalize on it. The importance of AGI has started to ramp up in the markets since just recently, SoftBank's CEO Masayoshi Son has highlighted the importance of this particular domain several times, and he also has ambitions to invest a whopping $100 billion only for the development of AGI. The future indeed holds plenty for the industry, and we can't wait to see how
