NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 D GPU Launched In China: Reduced Cores, Similar Gaming Performance For $1599 US

NVIDIA has officially launched its GeForce RTX 4090 D graphics card in China which comes with very similar performance as the original RTX 4090.

Today, NVIDIA officially launched the GeForce RTX 4090 D GPU for gamers which is designed to bring flagship gaming performance back to Chinese gamers. The card is a very unusual launch & will be limited to Asian markets where the original RTX 4090 had been restricted due to US-based regulations. We exclusively confirmed the existence of this model back in November.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 D GPU Specifications

Based on the information that we have regarding the specifications, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 D features a cut-down variant of the Ada Lovelace GPU we got on the RTX 4090. This variant is designated as the AD102-250-A1 SKU and should offer lower core counts to keep it within the TPP (Total Processing Performance) requirements set by the US government and make it comply with the latest export rules.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 D GPU features 14,592 CUDA cores, a boost clock of up to 2520 MHz, 24 GB of GDDR6X memory clocked at 21 Gbps, a 384-bit bus interface, and a TGP of up to 425W. All cards will get triple display outputs including 3 DP 1.4a and a single HDMI 2.1 port. While the card is getting custom models, none of them will support overclocking. Almost all major vendors in China such as MSI, GALAX, ZOTAC, and Inno3D are releasing their custom designs which are the same as the RTX 4090 models.

So with the RTX 4090 D, you are getting:

  • Similar Gaming Performance As RTX 4090
  • -11% Lower CUDA Cores & Tensor Cores
  • Same Memory Configuration (24 GB G6X)
  • Slightly Lower TGP (425W)
  • No Founders Edition Model
  • Only Custom Models
  • No Overclocking Support
  • Same Price As RTX 4090 (12,999 RMB / 1599 USD)
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 D GPU Custom Models

MSI is releasing its GeForce RTX 4090 D graphics card in the top SUPRIM X variant which features & is going to offer the best performance in its stack with a massive cooler and stunning design. MSI is also prepping a Gaming X SLIM variant which is a slimmer design and available for those who don't want to spend a premium price on the SUPRIM X variant.

ZOTAC is releasing a total of five variants which include the PGF, Trinity, and AIRO series. The PGF RTX 4090 D is the top variant with a fantastic quad-slot design smothered with RGB LEDs and a triple-fan cooling solution.

GALAX will be offering its GeForce RTX 4090 D graphics card in three variants including the 20th Anniversary Edition, Boomstart, and Metamaster variants. The company also has its AIO liquid-cooled design ready which comes with a 360mm radiator and a compact casing for the card itself.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 D GPU Performance

NVIDIA has also shared some performance metrics of the card and compared it against the RTX 3090 Ti. The RTX 4090 D offers up to a 3.5x performance boost with DLSS+RT in games such as Alan Wake 2.

In terms of energy usage, the GeForce RTX 4090 D consumes slightly lower power than the RT 4090 across an average of 22 games that were tested by NVIDIA. The Ada Lovelace architecture is highly efficient and knocks the socks off of the older Ampere and even the competitor's RDNA 3 GPUs in all performance/watt and power consumption metrics.

The US Department of Commerce and Secretary, Gina Raimondo, have recently taken a soft spot on the Chinese AI chip restrictions stating that NVIDIA should sell chips to China as they are used for commercial applications such as gaming. In terms of pricing, the upcoming gaming GPU is priced similarly to the previous RTX 4090 model with an MSRP of 12,999 RMB which ends up close to $1800 US.
