Loongson Unveils Next-Gen 3B6600 & 3B7000 8-Core CPUs: Up To 3.5 GHz, LG200 iGPU & Near Intel 10th Gen Performance

Loongson has unveiled its next-generation 8-core desktop CPUs, the 3B6600 and 3B7000 CPUs, for the Chinese domestic market.

In a conference held in Beijing, Loongson's Vice President Zhang Ge disclosed that the company has rapidly progressed with its processors' intellectual property (IP), claiming that all main cores of its CPUs are independently developed without relying on any third-party sources. The firm says that through their aggressive R&D attempts, they have managed to excel significantly in the realm of performance figures, and through their latest attempts, the company has decided to go one step forward.

Loongson says that when comparing their 3B6600 & 3B7000 chips with mainstream CPUs, they lag behind a lot in multi-core performance, but when it comes to single-core, the firm has to narrow down the gap significantly. Loongson says that cumulative single-core performance has increased by up to 20x with their processor iterations.

At the same time, other specs have also witnessed notable increments, credits to the generational improvements at a core level. The CPU is said to be on par with the 3A5000 CPU in terms of single-core performance which matches the first-gen Zen architecture while the newest 3A6000 CPU achieves IPC on par with Zen 3 and Raptor Lake CPUs on a clock-to-clock basis.

Detailing a bit about its upcoming chips, Loongson has disclosed that their 3B6600 CPU is intended for the mobile segment, featuring eight LA864 cores, with a frequency of 3 GHz and integrated "LG200" graphics. However, for the 3B7000 CPU, Loongson hasn't revealed much apart from the fact that it will feature a frequency of up to 3.5GHz and is likely intended for the desktop segment. The 3B7000 has several modern interfaces, including PCIe 4.0, SATA 3.0, USB 3.0, GMAC, and HDMI.

In terms of its integrated GPU architecture, Loongson reveals that it will support OpenGL4.0 and OpenCL3.0 and debut with INT8 tensor computing acceleration, likely enhancing the AI computing experience. The iGPU achieves up to 256 GFLOPs of compute performance while a discrete solution based on the same iGPU can offer up to 1 TFLOPs of compute performance.

Through this, Loongson doesn't only aim to target the domestic laptop markets; the firm aims to dominate them through its "Dragon" architecture, as it sees it competing with the likes of x86 and ARM. The company certainly is ambitious with its upcoming products, and moving ahead, we might see Loongson dominating the Chinese markets, given that they achieve consistent improvement in generational iterations.  so we can expect these chips to be hitting retail in domestic Chinese PCs soon too.
