GPD announced its brand new G1 eGPU module alongside the Win Max 2 (2023) handheld which features the AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT.

We recently talked about the GPD Win Max 2 which is a lightweight and efficient handheld console for gaming that packs AMD's Phoenix CPU and integrated RDNA 3 GPU. Besides the console being very unique in its laptop-esque shape and design, it also comes with an OcuLink port that can allow users to plug in an eGPU or use it for an external M.2 slot with up to 63 Gb/s bandwidth.

This allowed GPD to come with its own eGPU option known as the G1. The GPD G1 eGPU module hosts the AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT which the company states can exceed the performance of an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070. The GPU is based on the Navi 33 "RDNA 3" graphics core and features a total of 32 compute units, 2048 shader units, 32 MB of Infinity cache, 8 GB GDDR6 memory running across a 128-bit wide bus interface and a maximum clock speed of 2615 MHz. The TGP can be set between 75-120W.

Based on these specifications, the GPD G1 eGPU is likely being compared to an RTX 3070 Max-Q with a conservative power limit. In addition to that, the GPD G1 module comes with a single HDMI and dual DisplayPort outputs while offering three USB 3.2 (5 Gbps) ports and an SD memory card reader. The whole thing measures 225 x 111 x 29.8mm and weighs just 0.92kg. It's equipped with its own 240W GaN power supply and features active cooling.

The company provides a range of benchmarks, comparing the GPD G1 eGPU with the NVIDIA RTX 4070 (Desktop) and RTX 3070 (Mobile) GPUs. The Radeon RX 7600M XT puts up a really good fight and even wins against them in synthetic benchmarks. The overall performance in gaming at 1440P resolution is also very good as seen below:

The pricing of the GPD G1 eGPU on the other hand is a big question as the difference is around $650 US for crowd funders and $810 US for standard buyers.  This puts the pricing of the Radeon RX 7600M XT GPU for the GPD Win Max 2 higher than the Radeon RX 7900 XT and RTX 4070 GPUs which are desktop-class solutions and do provide better performance. The 7900 XT has an MSRP of $849 US but can be found below $800 US easily while the RTX 4070 starts at $599 US.

The specifications are also the same as the upcoming Radeon RX 7600 8 GB graphics card that is expected to retail close to $299 US so it might be a better decision to get that card and connect it to a eGPU port through a DIY solution which will cost much less.
