Enermax PlatiGemini 1200W 80 Plus Platinum & D.F. 12 Revolution 850W 80 Plus Gold PSU Impressions: ATX 3.1 & 12V-2×6 Ready!

The release of the new PCI-SIG ATX 3.1 guidelines and the introduction of the safer 12V-2x6 power connector design have prompted PSU makers to update their recent products with newer versions. Since the new standard is compatible with existing designs, it takes little effort for manufacturers to provide a safer and more robust platform that ensures stable power delivery to your PCs all the while tackling issues such as high power variances, spikes, and most importantly, safeguard from some of the troubles that were encountered with previous 16-pin connector designs. Keeping the trends in mind, Enermax has updated its PSU lineup with new high-end and SFF offerings which we will look at today.

So starting with our first unit, we have got the ENERMAX D.F.12 Revolution 80 Plus Gold unit which is an 80+ Gold design with a power rating that should be more than enough for today's high-end PC components. It's a fully modular design and most importantly, comes within a SFF package that makes it the smallest ATX 3.1 PSU yet, measuring 122x150x86mm.

Coming to the specifications, the ENERMAX D.F.12 850W Revolution 80 Plus Gold unit we got offers a maximum DC output of 850W Watts. It's an 80 PLUS Gold unit with efficiency rated at greater than or over 87% at 100% load. The PSU is fully compliant with Intel's C6 & C7 power states and has an operating temp of up to 50C. The PSU has an input voltage of 100-240V and an input current rating of 10A.

Some protection features that you get on the ENERMAX D.F.12 Revolution series PSUs include:

  • The Smallest ATX 3.1 ATX PSU with only 122mm in depth
  • ATX 3.1 & PCIe 5.1 with 600W 12V-2x6 Cable
  • Substantial Packaging Saves 28.7% of Packaging
  • Up to 235% Power Excursion
  • Invest in Longevity with Dust-Free Rotation Tech.
  • Fully Modular 80 PLUS Gold Certified
  • Industrial-Grade 100% Japanese Capacitors
  • Optimal Semi-Fanless Tech. with 50% Zero-RPM
  • Easier for Back-Connect Devices
  • According to ENERMAX, the D.F.12 PSUs come with less than 200ms power-on time and can sustain 235% power excursions on the latest hardware. That's a 2000W excursion when taking into account up to 850W designs for some RTX 4090 GPUs but we have seen in reality that the card doesn't hit power spikes that high and mostly averages around 400-450W in gaming workloads.

The cooling is provided by a top-mounted dust-free rotation fan which measures 115mm. The fan comes with a dual-fan design and the D.F. switch rotates the fan in opposite directions, enabling its self-cleaning capabilities. There's also a 6-pole motor inside the fans with 3 phases that provide minimal vibration for silent operation.

The unit we received comes in a large cardboard package with a picture of the PSU on the front flyer. The front also lists several features such as the 80 Plus Gold Rating, 12V-2x6-Ready, and ATX 3.1 Ready.

The backside of the package is bare and doesn't list any information so it's time to open up the package.

Within the package, the PSU unit is held between foam packaging to protect it during shipping while the cables are supplied in their separate pouch. There are also four screws supplied with the PSU for installation within your casing.

The PSU is indeed a very compact design which is as the company had promised in its introduction. The cables within the packaging pouch include 1x ATX 20+4 pin (60cm), 1x 12V-2x6 (60cm) cable, two 8-pin CPU cables (70cm), 3x PCIe 8-pin cables (60cm), 6 Molex cables (1x 45/15/15/15cm), and 8x SATA connectors (2x45/15/15/15cm).

The whole PSU is coated in black and has mesh top and back grills for airflow and exhaust purposes.

This 122mm chassis makes the PSU easier to manage within crammed-up PC cases. The exact dimensions of the PSU are 122x150x86mm.

On the back, you can see the power plug, the power switch, the D.F. (Dust-Free) fan control button, and a large mesh panel that acts as an exhaust vent.

Now depending on how you use the PSU, the bottom panel reads the specifications and power ratings. The PSU is rated to output a maximum of 70.8A and 849.6W through the 12V rails.

The sides of the PSU come with stylized yellow and black faceplates which add a nice touch.

Coming to the connectors, there are 1 PCIe 12+4 (12VHPWR), five PCI-e 6+2-pin connectors, an ATX 24-pin (14+10 pin) connector, four 4-pin Molex connectors, and a single RGB sync header.

Connectors on the PSU include 2x CPU 8-pin and 5x PCIe connectors (including the two CPU plugs), three SATA/Molex connectors, a single 12V-2x6, and an ATX 24-pin connector.

Lastly, we have the dust-free rotation fan with a high-pressure blade design and 115mm frame.

The second unit we are taking a look at is the high-end ENERMAX PlatiGemini 1200W 80 Plus Platinum unit which is an 80+ Platinum design with a power rating that should be more than enough for today's high-end PC components.

The main highlight of this PSU is that it is the first dual-mode PSU design that conforms to both ATX 3.1 and ATX12VO standards. The latter helps the PSU achieve maximum efficiency using a 10-pin connector cable that eliminates the 3.3V and 5V rails & makes sure that all of the power is delivered via the singular 12V rail. The design of this PSU makes it a future-proof product that will be ready for next-gen ATX12VO solutions.

Coming to the specifications, the ENERMAX PlatiGemini 80 Plus Platinum unit offers a maximum DC output of 1200 Watts. It's an 80 PLUS Platinum unit with efficiency rated at greater than or over 94.20% at 100% load and 76% efficiency at just 2% load. The PSU is fully compliant with Intel's C6 & C7 power states and has an operating temp of up to 50C. The PSU has an input voltage of 100-240V and an input current rating of 15A.

It's good to see that PSU makers have been adopting the latest PCI-SIG standards as soon as they are announced. The last ATX 3.0 standard was designed to meet the requirements of existing CPU and GPU designs but a newer standard was quickly formulated to ensure stable power delivery & higher efficiency along with a more robust and safe power connector layout in the form of the ATX 3.1 standard and the 12V-2x6 connectors. The new standard is compatible with existing PSUs is what has made companies roll out their latest products so early in the market and can be easily bought from store shelves today.

Enermax is one of the leading PSU makers and has shown its commitment to following the latest standards in the industry. The D.F.12 Revolution is one of the most compact ATX 3.1-ready PSUs we have laid our hands on and it's a very robust solution for compact Mini PCs. The 850W power rating is good enough for all high-end workloads and hardware and the $140.99 US pricing is decent for this PSU.

Meanwhile, enthusiasts can look into the higher-end PlatiGemini series which brings a 1200W 80 Plus Platinum rating to the table in a juggernaut design. Both PSUs come equipped with 12V-2x6 connectors which are safer than the older 12VHPWR connectors plus the PlatiGemini is ready for the ATX12VO platforms with its dual-switching design which is the first in the industry. The PSU is costly at $249.99 US but you can surely call it a good long-term investment for your PC.
