AMD's latest Ryzen 7 5800XT "zen 3" CPU can reach above a boost clock of almost 5 GHz without hitting the default 105W TDP.

AMD launched their newest Ryzen 5000XT CPUs just three days ago, adding two new SKUs to the existing Zen 3 lineup on the AM4 platform. AMD has been doing such refreshes previously but it's mostly a small refresh of the existing chips to attain higher performance. But it looks like the 5000XT CPUs can achieve more than what AMD advertised. As the processors have already hit the shelves, we have some sneak peek into what these SKUs are capable of even before the reviews are published.

Popular hardware leakier @Zed__Wang(MEGAsizeGPU) has tested his AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT CPU and found that it can go beyond its boost clock of 4.8GHz. As visible in the HWiNFO, the Ryzen 5800XT can reach a good 4941.1MHz at 1.387V. What's surprising is the 5800XT's ability to reach this frequency at 88.977W, which is lower than its default TDP rating while the average power consumption remains at less than 70W.

MEGAsizeGPU says that he was running the 5800XT in 65W 'ECO' mode using the Noctua L12S low-profile CPU cooler, which can hardly keep up with the premium cooling solutions. However, the temperature does reach 80°C, which is an indication that it will be better to use a higher-end air cooler or AIO for maintaining lower thermals.

In another HWiNFO window, we can see that the user has set the ratio at x49.50 to reach this clock speed and used the ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ax motherboard, which is although a solid ITX motherboard for overclocking, is still not on the level of high-end B550 motherboards using the ATX form-factor.

Nonetheless, the AMD Ryzen 5800XT and possibly the 5900XT are probably coming from the top bins. We still await the performance numbers of these SKUs, particularly the Ryzen 7 5800XT in this case to see how far it can reach with PBO enabled, which allows it to draw more power to achieve higher clock speeds. It looks like the 5800XT can easily go beyond 5.0GHz without needing a beefier cooling solution.

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT retains most of the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X specs but has a 200 MHz higher boost clock. The 5800XT as well as the 5900XT can be overclocked on the X370/X470/X570, and B350/B450/B550 chipsets, offering users with these motherboards some newer and good options to upgrade from an older Ryzen CPU. The 5800XT is available for $249 US while the 5900XT is available for $349 US, making them great additions in the AM4 family.
