AMD Radeon RX 580 Equipped With Double The Memory, 16 GB Variant Shows Up 5 Years After Launch

The AMD Radeon RX 580 2048SP graphics card is almost 5 years old but Chinese manufacturers have started to offer the GPU with twice the memory capacities.
The GPU industry in China has witnessed rather odd products several times in the past; however, we have brought up a new case, this time the "heritage" AMD Radeon RX 580 getting equipped with a 16 GB VRAM.
This unique AMD Radeon RX 580 is being offered by the Chinese vendor "Kinology." You haven't heard this name in the past because the company isn't an official board partner of AMD, instead offers custom designs based on AMD's architecture. By default, the Radeon RX 580 was equipped with 8 GB memory, and Kinology doubles the VRAM, reaching a total of 16 GB. But does doubling the memory bring a significant performance bump? We will surely answer this later on.
While no reviewer has yet analyzed the GPU (due to its limited availability outside of China), we can get an idea of it through a listing on JD.com. As spotted by Videocardz, the images attached to the listing reveals that the GPU was running at WHQL-certified "23.5.2" driver. Hence we can say that the GPU is completely compatible with the official AMD GPU drivers, and the performance figures acquired will surely be somewhat accurate.
The AMD Radeon RX 580 16 GB GPU was tested against older-gen counterparts such as NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1060 and the GTX 1650. Despite having almost four times the memory, the Radeon RX 580 lagged behind the GTX 1060 in Ludashi benchmarks (a widely known synthetic benchmark in China). However, it did surpass NVIDIA's relatively-newer GTX 1650 and RTX 3050 mobile GPUs.
The results are undoubtedly disappointing, but you shouldn't expect much considering this card is super old by today's standards. GPUs with bumped-up VRAM have often emerged online in China, with most of them having a relation with the crypto mining boom in the 2019-2021 period. The card also seems to be making a marketing attempt around the recent 16 GB variants which have gone up in popularity ever since the failed launch of the RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB. This graphics card can be sold at a bargain and people might think that they got a great 16 GB card which is the talk these days but that won't be the case.
The AMD Radeon RX 580 16 GB GPU retails at 599 RMB / USD $83, which is a fairly decent price and could be useful in applications that require high VRAM. However, it is still interesting to see such "modified" products emerging since it gives an idea of what small companies are "cooking" when it comes to innovations.
