AMD FSR 3.1 Announced: Enables Frame Generation On DLSS, XeSS Upscaling Solutions, Improved Image Quality, 40 Game Support Later This Year

AMD has announced its latest FidelityFX Super Resolution technology update in the form of FSR 3.1 which will enable Frame generation on 3rd party upscaling solutions.
At GDC 2024, AMD unveiled the biggest update to the FSR 3 FidelityFX Super Resolution Technology since its launch last year. The update is simply called FSR 3.1 and brings various improvements and feature-level support with the biggest highlight being the enablement of FSR Frame Generation on other upscaling solutions such as NVIDIA DLSS and Intel XeSS. This is achieved by decoupling FSR 3 upscaling from frame generation and if you have a DLSS or XeSS-supported graphics card, then you can run frame generation too.
AMD FSR 3.1 will be available for developers on GPUOpen in Q2 and will be coming to games later this year.
This is huge news as many DLSS and XeSS games only support DLSS upscaling while XeSS still has no frame generation support (though it is in the works). With AMD FSR 3.1 Frame Generation, you can simply enable the feature on those solutions too without requiring any additional support. The red team isn't stopping there.
The other big updates coming with AMD FSR 3.1 are improvements to upscaled image quality. The two main areas where AMD's software team has worked to improve image quality are temporal stability at both rest and movement. This ensures that there's less flicker and shimmer when the objects are in motion. Furthermore, there are also reductions to overall ghosting so that the image quality is preserved throughout the scene.
Following is an example of temporal stability & ghosting reduction achieved with FSR 3.1 when compared to FSR 2.2 in Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart:

Lastly, AMD is providing an update on when to expect the first titles with FSR 3.1. There will be up to 40 game titles supported and the technology will be available later this year in games while the developer community will be able to access the FSR 3.1 FidelityFX API by Q2 2024.

Expect more updates from AMD for its FidelityFX software suite such as FSR 3, FSR 3.1 and frame-generation technologies in the coming months.
