Wooting 60HE+ Review — Is This The Greatest Gaming Keyboard Ever?

Everyone and their pets know that there is no shortage of great peripherals in the market--one has to be on the lookout for them. When someone talks about Wooting, the first thing that comes to mind is how this is one of the companies that has managed to make magnetic switches a lot more mainstream than they used to be. The original Wooting Two is considered to be the keyboard that managed to kickstart the trend, but I believe that it is the Wooting 60HE that pushed the company to the heights it is now standing at, and today, I am looking at the Wooting 60HE+.

What is the difference between the Wooting 60HE and Wooting 60HE+? Honestly, there is not much. The latter just supports screw-in stabilizers instead of the standard offered in the older version. Everything else is exactly the same. You get the same great RGB effects, same build quality, same unboxing experience, same software, and same excellent experience, and I don't think there is anything to complain about here.

Now, the Wooting 60HE+ comes in a box that is classic Wooting. I love the fact that the company has put enough attention into the unboxing experience. Although it is nothing crazy like some of the other keyboard unboxings I have done, it is more than enough to tell me that the company cares about its consumers just as much as it cares about creating great gaming keyboards.

Now, if you are looking for a box full of accessories, the Wooting 60HE+ is not for you, but that should not really matter. Wooting never claims that this is a custom keyboard, and it comes with everything that you need to get started. Simply put, everything that you would need in a gaming keyboard is already there.

Unboxing the Wooting 60HE+ is as simple and pleasant as it can get. This is one of the nicer keyboard unboxing experiences, thanks to how Wooting has added nice touches all over the box, allowing you to truly pay attention and get the feel of the product. Once the box is open, you are welcomed by the keyboard itself, which is in a nice, protective cover.

To make sure that everyone knows what they are getting, the Wooting 60HE+ comes with your standard set of accessories, including a nice and long braided cable, a keycap and switch puller, a couple of extra switches, some screws for your stabilizers in case you want, and of course, the Wooting strap. The strap is the only thing unusual about the unboxing experience because it is never something you see with other gaming keyboards but I am glad Wooting has added it here as it gives a nice touch.

I do understand that some users might have issues with the overall unboxing experience, but honestly, I don't really mind. The Wooting 60HE+ is known for its performance and the features that it delivers on both hardware and software levels, and that is where it shines. I can already tell you that this keyboard excels in delivering the best typing and gaming experience.

The Wooting 60HE+ excels at what it does, all thanks to the switches. The keyboard uses Gateron X Lekker magnetic switches with Hall Effect sensors that allow for rapid trigger and customizable actuation point. If you have been searching for a keyboard that will make you feel like you are cheating in competitive games, this is the one.

The above diagram shows you all the information that you need about the Gateron X Lekker switches. The switches are magnetic, meaning fewer moving parts and less wear and tear. More importantly, the Hall Effect sensor allows them to be programmed the way they want to. Now, this is not my first rodeo with a magnetic keyboard. I also reviewed and loved the Akko MOD007B HE, but the difference between that and this Wooting 60HE+ is the fact that the Wooting only supports magnetic switches because of the PCB design whereas the Akko also had support for mechanical switches.

By this point, it has become evident that the Wooting 60HE+ is a keyboard driven by its performance and nothing else. The keyboard is so deeply rooted in all the tech that is jammed into it that overiting that would be an injustice to it. Thankfully, this is where Wooting gets a lot of points for its Wootility, a software that allows you to customize all the aspects of this keyboard to a greater degree.

The gallery above gives you a basic understanding of Wootility, which you can use as a web-based app or an offline app, depending on your preference. However, the real magic happens in the Performance tab, where you can customize various aspects of this board to make it truly powerful.

The Performance tab will allow you to customize the actuation point of the Wooting 60HE+ The best thing is that you can go as low as 0.1mm and as high as 4.0mm. Now, if you are a typist, you would want something in the middle, but if you are gaming and you want a competitive edge, then the lower your actuation point is, the bet,ter as it will allow you to press the keys faster than other players thanks to how these switches work. The best thing is that you can always go ahead and set the actuation point of all keys or go for a per-key setting that will allow you to take your customization to the next level.

The Wootility also allows you to turn on Rapid Trigger mode, something that made the Wooting 60HE such a hit among gamers. The Rapid Trigger technology is slowly making waves in the gaming keyboard market, and while it might be difficult for some to understand, Wooting has an excellent video that explains everything you want to know about it.

In the simplest ways, turning on and using Rapid Trigger with customized actuation points will allow you to press the keys on your Wooting 60HE+ much faster than it would be possible on any other keyboard thanks to how Rapid Trigger works, and while it might look like a gimmick, the above video explains how it is more than that and how it actually helps in improving your overall gameplay experience.

In terms of the overall gaming and typing experience, I can tell you that the Wooting 60HE+ is one of the best keyboards out there. However, I can also go on record and say that I have also used better-sounding keyboards than this. The Gem80 from NuPhy, for instance, is the best-sounding keyboard and therefore, my favorite. However, that keyboard is largely focused on the typist in me and not the competitive gamer in me, and if I were to pick up a keyboard for gaming, I would have to go with this Wooting, and I am not ashamed about it.

Another thing that I really like about the Wooting 60HE+ is how bright its RGB lighting is. This is one of the best-looking keyboards in terms of RGB lighting, and although the number of effects is not a lot, if you are looking for a keyboard that has super-bright RGB lighting, then this keyboard is definitely something that you must go with.

If you are looking for a keyboard solely based on RGB lighting, then the Wooting 60HE+ definitely gets the job done. It is bright and vibrant, the saturation is handled brilliantly, and the north-facing LED lights ensure that you are getting the best results. Plus, all of it can be customized using Wootility, so you really do not have to worry about running out of options. There is also a deep level of customization with layers and a lot more that will allow you to truly customize your lighting experience.

So, with so much to like about the Wooting 60HE+ are there any things that are less than desirable in this keyboard? Well, yes, the keyboard is largely made out of plastic and although this would not have bothered me, I have been spoiled by a number of keyboards with much better build quality and similar price tags, and that makes me want more from this keyboard. Another thing that I would have wished for in this keyboard is a wireless variant--I have been spoiled by wireless keyboards, so it is just something that has become a preference for me over time.

The greatest thing about the Wooting 60HE+ is the fact that it uses a universal mounting system, which means that you have the option to swap out the bottom of this case for something else and something that is built with decent quality. If plastic is not your cup of tea, the sky is the limit, and you will find countless builds that you can go with. The good thing is that despite being a pre-built keyboard, there is a ton of customization that you can go with, making this keyboard a fan favorite in the community.

I am going to be honest, I quite love the Wooting 60HE+. This is the fourth Hall Effect keyboard I am using and this delivers an amazing experience. There are some quirks in terms of how the keyboard feels in hand, but from the perspective of a gamer, this might as well be the greatest gaming keyboard of all time. This has gotten me excited about the Wooting 80HE because that keyboard fits my desired form factor a lot, but I cannot really wait for that keyboard to launch. But for now, if you are looking for an excellent gaming keyboard that is packed to the brim with features, the Wooting 60HE+ definitely should be up your alley because you are going to get an excellent gaming and smooth typing experience.

The Wooting 60HE+ is an excellent keyboard for gamers who are looking for all the advanced features stacked into a single keyboard. Although it is a prebuilt, there is a ton of customization involved in it and will allow you to achieve pretty much anything you want to with this keyboard's performance so you really will not have to worry about anything not working in your favor.
