Samsung To Initiate Pilot Production Of Glass Substrates Semiconductor This Year

Samsung's Electro-Mechanics division is stepping towards the production of glass substrates semiconductors as it races against Intel.

It seems like the future of semiconductors lies in glass substrates, as firms like Intel and Samsung battle against each other to initiate production as soon as possible.

We previously reported on how Samsung's Electro-Mechanics department has shifted its R&D resources to glass substrates in an attempt to explore a potential business horizon untapped by other industry leaders. Despite the standard being available for some years now, glass substrates packaging hasn't made much strides in the markets, but it looks like this might change moving into the future.

Korean media, ET News, reports that Samsung plans to build a "pilot" production line for its next-gen packaging technology by the end of this year, with a completion date set for September. Samsung's concept of glass substrates was initially brought into the market at CES 2024, where the firm revealed it as a vision for the future. Even though these new semiconductors are in their naive stage regarding R&D, the Korean giant has decided that now might be the best time to get into production, potentially surpassing competitors if their ambitions come true.

Speaking of glass substrates, let's talk about how they differ. The semiconductor type has numerous benefits, such as higher packaging strength, which ensures more extended durability and reliability, and a higher interconnected density since glass is usually much thinner than organic material, allowing the integration of multiple transistors into a single pack. It is said to overcome flaws associated with traditional methods and open a new wave of innovation for computing chips employing glass substrates.

It will be interesting to see how big of an impact Samsung may achieve with glass substrates because Intel has been a long player in this particular segment, probably pioneering the technology.
