Samsung Electronics Preps LPDDR5x, AutoSSD & GDDR7 Solutions For Automobile Segment

Samsung announces plans to make huge strides within the automotive industry with next-gen technologies such as LPDDR5x, GDDR7 & AutoSSD.
In the Investors Forum 2023, held in Hong Kong, Samsung Electronics disclosed that the company plans to establish a dominant position in the automotive memory market in the upcoming years. The company wants to target the rapidly progressing "autonomous driving" segment, where the onboard components such as the memory and other technologies play a vital role in the product's functionality.
Samsung believes that the automotive market can potentially see a huge economic upturn courtesy of the AI boom. Sources report that the automotive system semiconductor market, which is currently at US $50 billion, is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 17% over the next five years (2023-2028), outpacing the mobile (6%) and high-performance computing (12%) sectors. Such figures mean business for companies, especially Samsung, since they have both semiconductor and memory solutions available within their arsenal, giving them the edge over others.
To meet the computational demands of the "AI-inspired" automotive industry, Samsung plans on releasing a new variant of its cutting-edge LPDDR5X memory type, which is rumored to be half in size compared to the original one, but it comes with a whopping 20% more efficient performance. The upgraded memory chip will have a capacity ranging from 2 GB to 24 GB, a speed of up to 68GB/s, a bandwidth of 8.5Gbps per channel, and a 561FBGA package, making it well-positioned for large-scale industry applications.
Apart from new memory technologies, the Korean giant plans to introduce a detachable Auto Solid State Drive (SSD) next year as well, which focuses on increasing data efficiency by enabling storage virtualization, allowing a single SSD to be partitioned for use by multiple SoCs thus making performance upgrades much more convenient. The automotive SSDs are rumored to come with capacities of 512GB-4TB and speeds up to 6.5GB/s. They could prove to be a game-changer in autonomous vehicles, especially aiding in the process of driving assistance and autonomy.
Finally, the company yet again gave a recap on the development of the GDDR7 memory type, claiming that it could play a great part in achieving higher autonomous driving levels. GDDR7 is expected to feature 32 Gbps bandwidth per channel, along with transfer of large data volumes at 128 GB/s.
Samsung is shaping itself to play a key role when it comes to transitioning towards next-gen capabilities, and the company now aims to achieve a dominant spot in the autonomous driving industry by 2025, mainly through advancements in its memory and storage portfolio.
