Ryzen 9000 “Zen 5” CPUs Aren’t Going To Be Faster Than Ryzen 7000X3D “Zen 4” In Gaming, Says AMD

AMD's Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" Desktop CPUs might be a huge upgrade on paper but it looks like Ryzen 7000X3D "Zen 4" chips will still be king in gaming.

With its Zen 5 architecture, AMD is delivering a solid +16% IPC uplift for its next generation of high-performance CPUs known as Ryzen 9000. The company showcased a phenomenal +56% lead over Intel's flagship Core i9-14900K CPU in multi-threaded applications and a solid +23% lead in gaming. However, in an interview with Tom's Hardware, it looks like users who are running an existing AMD Ryzen 7000X3D chip shouldn't bother upgrading to the next-gen Non-X3D parts since the company itself states that the difference between the two chips is small.

The information comes from Donny Woligroski, AMD's Senior Technical Marketing Manager, who recently highlighted some cool and exciting changes with the Ryzen 9000X3D "3D V-Cache" CPUs. AMD showcasing the Ryzen 9000 "X" CPUs first was kind of expected since the company tends to launch its X3D parts later as we have seen with the Ryzen 5000X3D and Ryzen 7000X3D flavors & things will be the same with the Zen 5 launch.

Donny states that while AMD's Ryzen 9000 CPUs are a big upgrade over the competition, versus its own Ryzen 7000X3D chips, the new SKUs might not offer a big improvement or may not even end up faster. He specifically said the "X3D is still the king of the hill" although only by a small margin. If you compare the Ryzen 7000 "X" CPUs with the Ryzen 5000X3D chips, then the difference is quite big since the Zen 4 architecture was a big leap forward (5800X3D vs 7800X3D).

Now with the AMD Ryzen 9000 series, the Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs will still retain leadership gaming performance but the difference between the two will be smaller. And Ryzen 9000 will be able to do things much better in non-gaming tasks versus the Ryzen 7000X(X3D) SKUs. So one can take Ryzen 7000X3D as the baseline of today's high-end gaming performance on the AMD platform and add a very nice improvement over them that should be expected of the AMD Ryzen 9000X3D CPUs.

Of course, for users who care more about a balanced performance, the Ryzen 9000 CPUs offer a lot of value, especially when it comes to their higher TDP support, better overclocking capabilities & a lot better multi-threading performance. But for users who prioritize gaming over everything, it's a better decision to just wait till AMD announces Ryzen 9000X3D "3D V-Cache" CPUs. These chips are expected to launch in September as per the latest reports so you wouldn't have to wait that long to see the next X3D release with Zen 5 cores in action.
