Qualcomm Bringing “AI PC” Leadership To Desktop PCs With Snapdragon X CPUs

Qualcomm has just announced that its Snapdragon X CPUs will be coming to desktop PCs, ushering in a new era of "AI PC" & Copilot-ready platforms.

During its Computex 2024 keynote, Qualcomm announced that its Snapdragon X CPUs will be coming to all PC form factors including desktop PCs. This is big news since we will see a third entrant in the desktop PC space where Intel and AMD have been the dominant forces for long.

In the mobile segment, Apple, AMD & Intel were the three main forces but Qualcomm shook things upon when it announced its Snapdragon X CPU platform last year powered by the Oryon CPU core architecture. These chips are now launching and shipping in laptops from all major vendors such as ASUS, HP, Dell, ACER, and Lenovo with a very diverse selection, making use of the Snapdragon X Elite & Snapdragon X Plus CPUs.

But that wasn't enough for Qualcomm or you might say that the company doesn't want its momentum to stay focused on just the PC laptop side of things. With such a big win with its first wave of AI PC and CoPilot+-ready PC designs, the next logical step for Qualcomm should be the desktop PC platform and that's exactly where they are headed. Qualcomm is currently the only company with a proper CoPilot+ PC platform in production and launching this month.

The Desktop PC platform is a very interesting segment as it mainly includes Intel and AMD in the DIY and OEM space. Both have been competing over the decades but the arrival of Qualcomm will pose a major threat and heat the space even more if the company can recreate the same level of hype and success as it has so far achieved in the laptop space.

It will be interesting to see if Qualcomm sticks with the OEM route or goes for a more DIY-friendly route too in the desktop PC space. These new desktop PC solutions will be marked under the AI PC platform so the former is likely but if there is good demand, then we might see a DIY niche emerge from within Qualcomm, extending its Snapdragon X CPU family to a brand new host of users. The company also has an extensive roadmap laid out for the coming years when it comes to its Oryon CPU architectures and the AI PC battles have just begun with NVIDIA expected to enter it soon too. As such, we can't wait to see some desktop PCs from Qualcomm in 8, 10, and 12-core Snapdragon X variations.
