NVIDIA is preparing to launch its GeForce RTX 4070 GPU with GDDR6 memory later this month & the first custom model has been pictured.

The rumor about NVIDIA working on the newer version of the GeForce RTX 4070 is more or less confirmed now. A week ago, it was expected that NVIDIA would start working on the "GDDR6" model of the RTX 4070 since the company is facing a shortage of GDDR6X memory chips. According to the latest report by Videocardz, the AIBs have already started working on the newer edition. As per the new information, GALAX has prepared a brand new edition: Geforce RTX 4070 1-Click OC 2X with the GDDR6 memory.

This particular NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card has already been available for a while but with the GDDR6X memory configuration. The newer card will have GDDR6 memory chips installed but there doesn't seem to have any difference on the packaging. They could be featured on the back but it would've been nicer if the front also listed "GDDR6" memory for these newer variants.

The Galax GeForce RTX 4070 GDDR6 GPU looks identical to the original one and features a dual-slot design and a single 8-pin power connector. However, the newer edition will use the AD104-251 SKU instead of AD104-250 which was featured on the GDDR6X variants. Newer RTX 4070 SUPER GPUs also started using the same SKU earlier this year.

It has also been reported that the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 with GDDR6 memory will start appearing on the shelves from the 20th of August. The report comes from the Board Channels, which states that the original RTX 4070 with GDDR6X memory will likely remain short in supply but the newer card will assist the situation. The RTX 4070 GDDR6 edition isn't having an official release on the 20th of August but will instead quietly start to enter the market.

As GDDR6 memory on the newer RTX 4070 will run at a slightly lower speed than GDDR6X (20Gbps vs 21Gbps), there are possible performance impacts, which may or may not be noticeable in every game or app. However, NVIDIA doesn't seem to be interested in announcing the card officially since the newer edition is likely to remain for a temporary period in the market.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 remains one of the best graphics cards in the Ada lineup and even with the RTX 4070 Super taking its place for $50 more, the RTX 4070 still sells like hotcakes. Unlike the higher-end non-Super cards, the RTX 4070 still sells quite better than its bigger siblings in the Korean market and globally.
