NVIDIA GPUs continue to dominate on the latest market share statistics posted by the gaming platform, Steam, with the RTX 3060 being the leading choice among gamers.

Steam is the go-to platform for PC gamers, amounting to 150 million monthly active gamers and a peak concurrent player base of 34 million. It is by far the largest gaming platform with the highest list of games available under a single roof. Each month, Steam conducts its hardware survey which is participated by millions of gamers to get an idea of what hardware and platforms they are using.

For years now, NVIDIA & Intel have been the dominant forces on Steam and that's hardly changed as of March 2024. According to the latest statistics (March 2024), 78% of the playerbase is running an NVIDIA GPU followed by 14.64% AMD GPUs and 7.24% Intel GPUs (mostly iGPUs). The majority (93.76%) of gamers now have a DX12-compliant GPU and when it comes to which products are the most popular, NVIDIA reigns supreme.

Topping the charts is the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 which was released back in 2021 and has seen several variants since then. The GPU has a share of 6.92% and witnessed the single-largest share increase last month with a +0.75% gain. This could be due to these GPUs being easily accessible in the second-hand market, and we have also seen them discounted across the globe.

Despite the launch of the newer RTX 4060 GPUs, the RTX 3060 remains in production due to its ongoing demand. The second most popular GPU on the list is the RTX 2060 (4.10%) followed by the GTX 1650 (4.07%). NVIDIA ended the production of its GeForce 16 series last month.

The newer GeForce RTX 4060 is the popular choice among the GeForce RTX 40 "Ada" GPUs with a share of 2.59%, achieved in less than a year since its launch. The GPU saw the second-biggest share climb of 0.60% and what's more interesting is that the GeForce RTX 4070 is neck-to-neck with a 2.50% market share. That's quite a big deal considering that the latter costs almost twice as much. The flagship GeForce RTX 4090 also remains more popular than the RTX 4080.

Meanwhile, the only latest AMD Radeon GPU that shows up in the list is the RX 7900 XTX with a share of 0.34%. The AMD Radeon Graphics (iGPUs) amount to around 1.98% of the share.

Switching over to the CPU side of things, the Intel CPUs remain the most popular with a 68.07% share. However, AMD has managed to grab a big chunk here too, with a 31.93% share in just a few years thanks to its strong Ryzen lineup. As for the popularity factor, 6 cores amount to the biggest share contributor with 35.69% followed by 8 cores at 19.49%. Quad-cores (or older PCs) are still being used by a large portion of gamers and almost match the number of 8-core systems out there at 19.30%.

Overall, this provides a good look at the overall gaming market and who among the big three are the most popular choices for PC gaming.
