MSI GeForce RTX 4090 & RTX 4080 Gaming SLIM GPUs Drop The Weight, Just 3-Slots Thick

MSI has released its top GeForce RTX 4090 & RTX 4080 Gaming SLIM series which reduce the overall thickness from 4-slots to 3-slots.

MSI had previously unveiled its "GAMING SLIM" GeForce RTX 40 GPUs, which featured a total of 20 different models. The company showcased the mid-range graphics cards within the lineup, and now MSI has revealed its flagship GeForce RTX 4090 & RTX 4080 Gaming SLIM series.

The MSI GeForce RTX 4090 & RTX 4080 GAMING SLIM GPU lineup is generally targeted toward providing consumers the option of utilizing the power of Ada Lovelace GPUs without worrying about their "huge" size, considering many people couldn't harness the NVIDIA GPUs in compact builds.

However, with MSI's new Gaming SLIM lineup, these high-end GPUs have seen a great decrease in thickness & dimensions, with the most notable one being NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4090. The GAMING SLIM variant of the GPU is now confined to just three slots, which is impressive given the fact that the industry trend is all about making GPUs "beefier" (Take Maxsun's recent RTX 4090 for example).

Diving into the technical specs, the MSI GeForce RTX 4090 GAMING SLIM will now come with a 62mm thickness, which is a reduction of almost 20 percent from the original GAMING X TRIO variant. Moreover, the GPU will also feature a decrease in weight, coming at 1.78 kg which will contribute towards ease of building and eliminating the extent of "GPU sag" present in the ordinary GeForce RTX 4090 variants.

MSI hasn't gone into depth when it comes to revealing the tactics adopted behind the weight reduction but based on the press release images of the GPU, the company has made changes in the backplate of the GAMING SLIM GPUs, and the decrease in weight may due to the additional cutouts all along the GPU chassis and the I/O port. However, it will be interesting to see how these GPUs perform in real-time, especially in the thermal department given that MSI claims that changes made would have no impact on GPU temperatures.

The MSI GeForce RTX 4090 & RTX 4080 GAMING SLIM GPUs are in no way an "underclocked" or a less-performing lineup, however, there are minor clock adjustments present in the GeForce RTX 4070 variants. We don't have a figure on where the GeForce RTX 4090 GAMING SLIM will be priced but expect the m close to their Non-SLIM variants. The RTX 4080 Gamning SLIM will also be made in a white-colored flavor though the RTX 4090 Gaming SLIM White may launch later.
