MSI is the latest motherboard manufacturer to introduce DDR5 memory support of up to 256 GB on its Intel 700 & 600 motherboards.

The PC memory segment is seeing continued innovation from the CAMM standard which has been adopted by the laptop market and coming soon to the desktop segment and the latest 64 GB DDR5 modules which offer twice as many capacities as what was previously possible.

Last year, we saw an abundance of non-binary DIMMs ranging from 24 to 48 GB, which boosted the desktop memory capacities up to 192 GB. Now memory manufacturers are developing the latest 64 GB modules which will boost DDR5 capacities up to 256 GB. Previously, you had to use 4 DDR5 sticks to get to 128 GB, now, you can just use two sticks.

There are plenty of advantages to having higher memory capacity as certain applications like content creation, rendering, and the upcoming AI software suites can definitely consume a lot of memory without you ever knowing. Higher memory can also provide speedups to overall system performance in such cases.

According to MSI, their latest BIOS for Intel 700 & 600 series motherboards is now available and one of the biggest advantages that they have is the compatibility. Other manufacturers required users to disable some features to access the full 256 GB capacities such as 4G, Resizeable Bar & Remapping. With MSI's latest BIOS, there's no need to disable any of the said features and you can essentially get a seamless 256 GB experience on their boards.

Hardware insider and leaker on X, chi11eddog, has shared a screenshot of the MSI Z790 Carbon MAX WIFI motherboard running 256 GB DDR5-4800 memory with an Intel Core i9-14900K CPU. It would be interesting to see what the maximum speeds are supported when using high-capacity memory kits but for those who prefer capacity over speed, well the solutions are now out there.
