Microsoft is planning to unveil its DirectX DirectSR "Super Resolution" tech at GDC 2024 which is being worked on with AMD & NVIDIA.

This is the first time we have heard the name, and we haven't seen any previous leaks disclosing anything about Microsoft's DirectX DirectSR (Direct Super Resolution), but based on assumptions, it is said that the technology is focused on upscaling content and has a similar naming convention to AMD's FSR. Microsoft hasn't released a similar feature in the past, so it will be their first take towards upscaling resources, and it will be interesting to see what DirectSR brings onboard.

The information was revealed in the GDC 2024 schedule and the description of Microsoft's session reveals that the firm will give an in-depth view of DirectSR, showing the audience the feature's capabilities, and how Microsoft has worked with partners like AMD and NVIDIA to achieve a "universal" way of integrating upscaling technology into titles. We could probably see a unified form of resources for developers, but that is yet to be seen.

The DirectX team will showcase the latest updates, demos, and best practices for game development with key partners from AMD and NVIDIA. Work graphs are the newest way to take full advantage of GPU hardware and parallelize workloads. Microsoft will provide a preview into DirectSR, making it easier than ever for game devs to scale super resolution support across Windows devices.

There were leaks a few weeks back highlighting the introduction of an AutoSR (Super Resolution) feature to be featured within the next major Windows 24H2 update but it is unclear if DirectSR is the same or different technology. One thing we can expect is Microsoft to work with major GPU vendors to unify the Super Resolution approach which will be a big deal for PC gamers. The AutoSR tech is based around AI-upscaling which is incorporated by the likes of NVIDIA (DLSS) & Intel (XeSS) whereas AMD's FSR uses a more traditional non-AI approach yet comes close to achieving quality with the AI-tuned algorithms.

Microsoft is indeed one of the drivers of the AI bandwagon, and the firm has a lot to unveil when it comes to AI-backed technologies, and I believe DirectSR is one of them. GDC takes place between 18th March till 22nd March with this specific presentation planned for March 21st so stay tuned as more information comes by.
