Meta To Utilize 350,000 NVIDIA H100 AI GPUs By 2024, Expands Efforts Towards AGI

Mark Zuckerberg's Meta is emerging as a dominant AI player and is accumulating immense computing power, as the firm is likely to utilize 350,000 NVIDIA's H100 AI GPUs by 2024.
Meta's history of ventures in the tech industry has been a rough one, especially after the firm entered into the VR business, however, it seems like the business model has been redirected toward artificial intelligence.
Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg took to Instagram Reels to announce a "redefining" approach of the company, which is likely to set the future of the world of AI, as the firm reveals the development of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). This particular segment in the tech industry has been the hottest topic, succeeding generative AI, and has led companies such as Meta and OpenAI into a competitive race.
Some updates on our AI efforts. Our long term vision is to build general intelligence, open source it responsibly, and make it widely available so everyone can benefit. We're bringing our two major AI research efforts (FAIR and GenAI) closer together to support this.
We're currently training our next-gen model Llama 3, and we're building massive compute infrastructure to support our future roadmap, including 350k H100s by the end of this year -- and overall almost 600k H100s equivalents of compute if you include other GPUs. Also really excited about our progress building new AI-centric computing devices like Ray Ban Meta smart glasses. Lots more to come soon.
Mark Zuckerberg - CEO of META
Mark Zuckerberg also disclosed some restructuring in Meta's AI-focused workforce, as he announced the merging of the FAIR (Fundamental AI Research) group, with the company's genAI department to ensure a collaborative and united approach to AGI. The firm has also announced a new wave of talent acquisition to cater to the need to progress into next-gen markets, as the company expands itself into new domains, along with improving on the existing resources such as the firm's Llama LLM model.
However, to achieve what Meta wants from AGI and genAI, the need of adequate computing power is a must, which is why in his message, Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company will own around 350,000 of NVIDIA's cutting-edge H100 AI GPUs by the end of this year. Meta will have a total of 600,000 of H100s equivalent compute power if you factor in other GPUs being utilized by the firm.
The number disclosed by the CEO is astonishing since it tells us what sort of power is being accumulated in the industry, to cater to the requirements that artificial intelligence needs. As said previously by Meta's Chief Scientist, amid everything, NVIDIA is indeed supplying the weapon for the ongoing AI war, with Meta having a "decent" arsenal of GPUs to combat competitors.
The announcement by Meta and the current dynamics of the market indicate one thing, and that is that AI is here to stay for a very long time, and is likely to revolutionize the way we see technology, especially once AGI reaches a wider adoption.
