MESA RADV Vulkan Driver For AMD Radeon GPUs Gets Vulkan Video H.264 & H265 Encode Support 1

The open-source MESA platform has received its new quarterly update, bringing in significant performance improvements to the RADV & Intel ANV Vulkan drivers.

Developers maintaining MESA have done a fabulous job in making the platform competitive with mainstream offerings through continuous optimizations and updates. Just recently, we saw the RADV Vulkan driver scoring huge ray-tracing gains, showing the dedication of MESA developers. However, this time, the new version 24.0 is an all-rounded update, providing both Intel and AMD Linux gamers with decent performance gains.

Starting with the major addition, the new version brings in "initial" support for Imagination PowerVR Vulkan driver, which is a resource that allows applications to leverage the graphics processing power of PowerVR GPUs, specifically those based on the Rogue architecture, using the Vulkan API. For those unaware, PowerVR Rogue is a GPU architecture specifically designed for mobile devices like the PowerVR G9100. This will not only prompt open-source development but will result in enhanced support for Rogue GPUs on Linux platforms as well.

Apart from that, the new Mesa 24.0 has also brought in faster ray-tracing performance in the Radeon "RADV" Vulkan driver. While the actual improvement statistics haven't been disclosed yet, the driver has received extensive RT optimizations in the past as well. Hence, the new upgrade will ramp up the gaming experience. Moreover, the Intel ANV Vulkan has also seen support for multiple Vulkan extensions along with many improvements for NVIDIA's Vulkan Driver "NVK".

The MESA platform has been shaping up to be a viable alternative to other offerings available to consumers, and with the new quarterly update, the overall experience on the platform would indeed improve vastly.
