LG Display has unveiled its roadmap for this year, and it seems like the manufacturer will focus on revamping the IPS technology & unveiling new marvels.

LG's Roadmap holds immense significance for the display industry since the firm plays a major role in setting market trends. LG plans to make 2024 a progressive one for the markets, especially in refining existing technology and introducing new solutions designed to cater to specific audiences. The firm plans on including WOLED panels, which we will discuss later on, along with variations of IPS panels, into their portfolio, and based on what is revealed, they have a lot of products in mass production. The analysis comes from TFTCentral, based on the industry reports they have received.

LG is all set to integrate "IPS Black" into their upcoming displays, which hasn't been entirely new since it was introduced in 2022, and Dell has already pushed out models housing it. However, the technology has improved since then, and LG finds it best to utilize it in 2024. The primary aim of LG here is to improve contrast ratios with IPS Black, reportedly reaching up to 3000:1, but this is a long-term enhancement plan for now. It is revealed that IPS Black panels by LG could house a resolution of up to 6144 x 3456 in a 31.5-inch size. Moreover, we could see the debut of 5K and 4K resolution panels as well, potentially coming in ultrawide form factors as well. Following is the IPS Black lineup which is currently in mass production:

  • 49" 32:9 Curved (5120x1440)
  • 40" 21:9 Curved (5120x2160 @ 120Hz)
  • 37.5" 24:10 Curved (3840x1600)
  • 34" 21:9 Curved (3440x1440 @ 120Hz)
  • 31.5" 16:9 Flat (6144x3456)
  • 27" 16:9 Flat (5120x2880)
  • 27" 16:9 Flat (2560x1440 @ 120Hz)
  • Moreover, another interesting adoption of IPS Black is in the high refresh rate segment, particularly those employed for gaming applications. It is said that the panel type will see huge generational improvements, with progression from mediocre 60Hz to blazing-fast 360Hz, with a 27” panel planned for debut by Q4 2024.

Moreover, there is great news for gamers as well, as the WOLED segment is expanding into the markets as well, and it is said that the gaming industry could benefit the most from it, especially since it comes with the quality of getting utilized in different modes, with variable refresh rates and resolutions. It makes competitive gaming and content consumption much easier in a gaming-oriented monitor since users can't adjust the onboard resolution with a button with the new Dual-Mode technology. LG Display is also planning to introduce the same feature into IPS panels as well, but there isn't a specific timeline for when we can see them available in the markets. Following are the gaming monitors that LG has planned out:

  • 27" Dual Mode IPS 16:9 (3840x2160 @240Hz + 1920x1080 @ 480Hz)
  • 27" Dual Mode IPS 16:9 (3840x2160 @144Hz+ 1920x1080 @ 288Hz)
  • 27" Gaming IPS Black 16:9 (2560x1440 @360Hz)
  • The roadmap shared by LG Display reveals that IPS Black and Dual Mode IPS is going to be the next big thing in the gaming monitor segment and could particularly gain more traction among gaming audiences. It shows that the general tone of the markets is more focused on bringing innovations within existing technologies, which is something quite appreciable.
