Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Leak Reveals Ryzen 8050 Branding For AMD Strix Point APUs

Lenovo's ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 laptop has leaked out and reveals the Ryzen 8050 branding for next-gen AMD Strix Point APUs.

Update [07/05/2024]: Lenovo China's product manager seems to suggest that the information is fake so take it with a grain of salt.

The leak comes from @TechnicallyLog1 who has posted a brochure of an upcoming Lenovo laptop, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5. There aren't a lot of details regarding the specifications but this is a 14-inch laptop and the main highlight is that it is powered by AMD's Ryzen Pro 8040 "Hawk Point" and 8050 "Strix Point" APUs. The laptop being part of the AI PC segment is equipped with Ryzen AI "NPU" that offers class-leading performance.

Additional specifications of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 laptop include up to 64 GB of DDR5 memory, faster WIFI, a 14" display with 400nits brightness, & an 85% screen-to-body ratio. The laptop mainly highlights its "next-level" repairability and the use of recycled components, all the while reducing energy consumption and delivering longer battery life.

Now coming back to the naming scheme, the mention of Pro CPUs means that AMD will likely have Strix Point APUs available in both standard and Pro flavors at launch. The "5" in the 8050 naming convention points out to the Zen 5 core architecture which will be powering the Strix Point APUs. Previously, it was expected that these chips would fall under the Ryzen 9050 naming scheme but Lenovo's leak doesn't seem to agree with that. With that said, the naming scheme shouldn't be a big issue since 2024's lineup is expected to fall under the Ryzen 8000 series criteria on mobile at least. The desktop chips are expected to use the Ryzen 9000 nomenclature as confirmed by board makers.

Also, the AMD Strix Point APUs mentioned here are going to be the monolithic designs based on a single 4nm die which should incorporate up to 12 Zen 5 + Zen 5C cores, up to 16 RDNA 3 compute units for graphics, and the brand new XDNA 2 AI NPUs. Following are some of the main highlights of the AMD Ryzen "Strix Point" APU family.

Lenovo already announced its ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD lineup which is expected to debut in June (2024) and will start at €1,299 (excluding VAT), initially featuring the Ryzen Pro 8040 "Hawk Point" APUs. We can expect the AMD Ryzen Strix Point APUs by the third quarter of 2024 at the earliest.

In addition to Lenovo, ASUS's lineup has also been leaked out which points out to several models under its ROG, TUF and ProArt families. AMD is expected to make a formal announcement of its next-gen Strix Point "Ryzen" APUs at Computex which is less than a month away.
