Lenovo Patent Reveals Ultrawide “Rollable” & Curved Displays For Next-Gen Notebooks

Ultrawide & Curved displays have taken the monitor segment by storm and it looks like we might see them soon in notebooks as a patent from Lenovo reveals.

So far, the notebook segment has followed the tradition of a simple flat panel design that matches the dimensions of the chassis however, that might change in the future as suggested by a patent from Lenovo unearthed by Pigtou.

We have seen curved & ultrawide gaming monitors aplenty on the desktop market. Still, the entire display segment is entering a revolution with new rollable and bendable panels that are coming out for smartphone devices first. The concept of an ultrawide monitor isn't new as it was tried and tested with Razer's Project Valerie which embedded two additional displays within the package & made for a nice ultrawide viewing experience however that product never came to fruition. It should also be mentioned that Lenovo is also working on a new and revolutionary PC laptop design with a transparent panel boasting OLED technology.

As for the Lenovo patent, it looks like Lenovo's Ultrawide rollable display will allow users to adjust the display based on their preferences. The laptop display will consist of fixed and movable sections with the fixed section being the screen in the middle that matches the chassis dimensions and the movable section being two panels on the sides of the screen which will use the foldable technology. These two sections will allow for a wider viewing experience than what is possible at the moment on laptops.

The full patent can be found here and from the looks of it, there will be a gear underneath the movable section which will either extend or contract the foldable display. The whole locking and extension mechanism is detailed within the patent and it looks like the same technology will also be used to offer the first curved displays on notebooks. This technology is still a patent so there's going to be some time before we see it in action but we can expect a glimpse from Lenovo during the MWC 2024 event.
