Intel's next-gen Z890 motherboards will ship with "Default Settings" which will be set by default for ease of mind for Arrow Lake PC builders.

With prior generations of the motherboards, Intel's partners went all out by enabling customized power profiles, targets, and plans which were great for gaining extra performance but these being set to enabled by default led to major issues. They were the initial culprit of the ongoing 14th and 13th Gen silicon degradation as they pushed the voltages and power ratings way too high and past the processor's limits.

These issues led to Intel forcing its motherboard makers to pull back all such profiles as the default option and replace them with its own guided "Default Settings". These somewhat reduced the CPU degradation process but the chips required more microcode patches to fully stabilize the products that still hadn't been degraded beyond a certain threshold. The standard Baseline default sets the PL1 rating to 125W and PL2 to 253W and the voltages/current ratings also see tuning.

With the upcoming Intel Core Ultra 200 "Arrow Lake" Desktop CPUs, motherboard vendors are now being confirmed to implement "Default Settings" as the out-of-the-box option for all products.

Intel Arrow Lake CPUs and Lunar Lake CPUs have already been confirmed to not feature the same issues such as instability and degradation as 14th and 13th Gen chips since they are based on a new core architecture but it's good to see that the chips won't be pushed hard on each motherboard. Benchlife also confirms the implementation of these "Default Settings" on Z890 motherboards in the following quote:

On the other hand, board manufacturer sources also mentioned that this time the Intel Z890 chip motherboard will be shipped with "Intel Default Profile" as the main one, but the BIOS allows motherboard manufacturers to add other settings on their own, such as "Extreme Profile" For users to choose.

It should be pointed out that there will still be custom power/voltage profiles and plans added by each respective motherboard manufacturer. We have confirmed with four major motherboard makers that they will have both "Performance" and "Extreme" profiles for their respective Z890 products but it will be up to the user to enable these. We have already listed the full power ratings for various Arrow Lake CPUs here.

There will also be a warning message provided to the end user for selecting each respective mode which is something that should've been there from the start but at least it's good to see motherboard vendors taking the right steps. On the topic of instability affecting 14th and 13th Gen CPUs, Intel will have a new update published at the end of this month so stay tuned.

The Intel Arrow Lake "Core Ultra 200" Desktop CPUs will be launching on the 24th of October alongside the Z890 motherboards. The first wave of CPUs and motherboards will be targeted at high-end gamers and enthusiasts so expect a fierce battle between the AMD Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" CPUs and the newest Intel parts.
