Intel To Deliver a Whopping “100 Million” CPUs For AI PCs By 2025

Intel sets an ambitious target of delivering 100 million CPUs for AI PCs by 2025, accelerating development in this rapidly growing segment.

The consumer computing industry, particularly the laptop markets, has seen a radical shift towards integrating AI capabilities into their products, and they have been labeled as "AI PCs." In layman's terms, this refers to machines equipped with AI capabilities to make the experience much more seamless, and it seems like the demand for such products has been immense. Team Blue has decided to capitalize on this as the firm's VP announced considerable plans to deliver over 100 million AI PC units by 2025.

Intel Vice President of Client Computing Group David Feng has disclosed that the company plans to provide 40 million AI PCs this year and another 60 million by 2025, showing Team Blue's optimism towards this segment. The reason behind it is that tech companies in the AI race are moving towards developing Edge AI, which refers to deploying artificial intelligence algorithms and models directly on devices, such as smartphones (offline/local processing), rather than on cloud or data centers since it is more efficient, and does a better job for consumer-oriented applications.

Intel's hopes of seeing growth in the PC industry through AI were seen long ago when the firm introduced its cutting-edge Meteor Lake lineup, which featured a dedicated NPU (Neural Processing Unit) for AI-related applications. Moreover, the firm is expected to bring significant generational improvements in AI computing through its Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake SKUs. Hence, Edge AI will become much more effective, which is why the AI PC segment is seen with massive optimism among manufacturers.

Since there haven't been "significant" changes in new lineups released in the industry, consumers are avoiding being a part of the upgrade cycle, but this tends to change moving ahead since AI capabilities being integrated into current-gen products, it could force potential customers from acquiring AI PCs, ultimately fueling growth in PC sales. It is reported that global PC shipments could top off to 267 million units in 2024, marking tremendous YoY growth, credited to the debut of AI PCs in the markets.
