Intel 13th & 14th Gen CPU Instability Issues Concern Motherboard Manufacturers, Claims It Will Put Arrow Lake's Release At Stake 1

Intel confirmed that its next-gen Arrow Lake-S, Arrow Lake-HX & Arrow Lake-H CPUs for desktops and laptops are on track for Q4 2024 launch.

Intel seems to be accelerating its own desktop and laptop roadmap with Lunar Lake CPUs shipping out in the coming quarter (Q3) as we reported here and Arrow Lake, the more performance-geared chips, heading for a Q4 2024 launch, targeting both desktop and laptop PCs.

During its preview, Intel shared some details regarding Arrow Lake CPUs which will come in Arrow Lake-S, Arrow Lake-HX, and Arrow Lake-H flavors. According to the blue team, the Arrow Lake CPUs will be rolling out in Q4 2024 with a proper debut expected to happen during Computex 2024 that is just a few weeks away.

In the preview, Intel gave a brief teaser of its next-gen Arrow Lake-S "Core Ultra 200" Desktop CPU and the die we are looking at confirms that the package will be once again a monolithic design but will house several tiles. The tiles include the CPU, GPU, SOC & IO tiles. The biggest tiles are the CPU & SOC ones which are the large rectangular one at the bottom and the square one in the middle. It also features a dummy tile which is also featured on the Lunar Lake CPU.

From what we can tell, the Intel Arrow Lake-S CPU die shown here is an 8+16 design with 8 P-Cores based on the Lion Cove core architecture and a total of 16 E-Cores based on the Skymont design. It should also be packing at least four Low-Power Crestmont E-Cores on the SOC Tile. the GPU tile has at least 2 or 4 Xe-cores based on the Xe-LPG "Alchemist" graphics architecture.

Intel is expected to launch at least 13 SKUs under its Arrow Lake-S "Core Ultra 200" CPU line. These will include the top unlocked "K" series chips such as the Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K, and the Core Ultra 5 245K. These will be followed by the Non-K 65W and 35W CPU family.

Following is what we know about Arrow Lake-S Desktop CPUs so far:

  • LGA 1851 Socket Longevity Planned Uptill 2026
  • DDR5 Only Compatibility, No DDR4 Support
  • Kicks off With 800-Series Motherboards
  • Support For Up To DDR5-6400 Memory (Native JEDEC)
  • Increased PCIe Gen 5.0 Lanes Through CPU & PCH
  • Arrow Lake-S First Desktop Family Supported (DIY)
  • Arrow Lake-S CPUs feature 3 MB L2 Cache Per P-Core
  • Arrow Lake-S CPUs feature Alchemist iGPUs
  • Arrow Lake-S CPUs feature 8+16, 6+8 CPU SKUs
  • Arrow Lake-S 8+16 (24 Cores)
  • Arrow Lake-S 6+8 (14 Cores)
  • No Hyper-Threading Support(?)
  • Launching In 2H 2024
  • The Intel Arrow Lake-S Desktop CPUs will be designed around the LGA 1851 socket which will be featured on the latest 800-series motherboards. These motherboards are likely to debut with the flagship Z890 chipset which should make an appearance during Computex 2024. It was recently revealed that these motherboards will feature native Thunderbolt 4 support along with significant updates, mainly in regards to memory support through a stronger IMC (Integrated Memory Controller).

Meanwhile, Intel's Arrow Lake-HX and Arrow Lake-H CPUs are likely to ship later this year with proper availability in early 2025 following the launch of NVIDIA's Blackwell "RTX 50" GPUs.
