Intel Battlemage "BMG-G21" GPU With Xe2 Graphics Architecture Spotted, Lunar Lake Xe2-LPG Receives Further Support 1

Intel's Battlemage based on the Xe2 GPU architecture has received extensive support in Linux, as the firm adds five different new device IDs, showing that enablement is on track.

During the recent Computex keynote, Intel gave us a rundown of what to expect with their Xe2 graphics architecture in terms of capabilities, but we never really got a chance to know about specific SKUs within the series. However, the architecture's enablement at Linux might provide us an idea of how Intel plans to decorate the lineup as the newest DRM-Xe-Next pull request; the firm has decided to add in new device IDs associated with the Xe2 architecture or Battlemage GPUs.

Phoronix reports that a total of five different IDs have debuted at Linux. Those include 0xE202, 0xE20B, 0xE20C, 0xE20D, and 0xE212. It's important to note that these IDs certainly don't conclude about the number of variants in the Battlemage lineup since, as said by Phoronix themselves, some of them may represent early engineering samples or even unreleased SKUs that Intel decided not to proceed with. With that, we should expect several similar device IDs to drop by at Linux as we approach the official launch timeline.

We dove into the new additions and changes to find out Xe2 "Battlemage" specific updates and they are listed below:

  • Xe/Xe2 Workarounds fixes and additions
  • Enable Xe2+ overrun mode
  • Enable Indirect Ring State support for Xe2
  • xe2hpg compression
  • Introduce performance tuning changes for Xe2_HPG
  • drm/xe/hwmon: Add HWMON support for BMG
  • drm/xe/hwmon: Expose card power and energy attributes of BMG
  • drm/xe/xe2: Recognize Xe2_HPG IP
  • drm/xe/xe2: Recognize Xe2_HPM IP
  • drm/xe/xe2: Define Xe2_LPG IP features
  • drm/xe/xe2: Define Xe2_LPM IP features
  • drm/xe/xe2: Program GuC's MOCS on Xe2 and beyond
  • As you can see, there are a lot of Xe2 and Battlemage Arc-related additions. HWMON support and various power/energy attributes will also be added to the software tool once these graphics cards hit retail which is expected later this year.

We recently reported on how Intel's "BMG-21" Battlemage chip debuted on Linux with the LLVM compiler and the enablement of "Panel Replay Technology." This shows that Intel is dedicated to providing top-notch support for its future Xe2 architecture on the platform. Apart from that, the newest patches have brought in several improvements, such as SR-IOV virtualization preparations, scheduler improvements, and other necessary updates.

In terms of release date, Battlemage GPUs are expected to launch in the second half of this year so you can expect an update or two at the next Innovation event later this year.
