Erying, a Chinese motherboard manufacturer, has decided to repurpose Intel's Alder Lake-H Laptop CPUs for the desktop market.

This isn't the first time that manufacturers have repurposed the Intel Laptop CPU lineup for the PC desktop segment. We saw this with Tiger Lake CPUs that were retrofitted on desktop-grade boards by MaxSun and MSI. Now, Chinese manufacturer, Erying, has decided to introduce a range of DIY Gaming PC kits that offer some great value considering the specs and features they have to offer.

The Erying DIY Gaming Kit options range from several Intel 12th Gen Alder Lake-H CPUs such as the Core i7-12700H, Core i5-12650H, Core i5-12500H, and the Core i5-12450H. That's anywhere from 8 to 14 cores in 45W base and 95W MTP packages. The motherboards themselves come in mATX and Mini-ITX form factors.

So, let's break down the actual features that Erying says they have on offer with these new options for DIY gamers.

Each of the mentioned Intel Alder Lake-H CPUs has been soldered to the motherboard and placed under a giant IHS. This is because Alder Lake-H chips use a BGA package which means no upgrade path is available once you buy this for the CPU. But the CPU is compatible with any LGA 1700 cooler that is available. A single 8-pin connector powers the motherboard and its 6+1 Phase VRM design.

The Erying Mini-ITX motherboard is a 17x17cm design and features two DDR4 DIMM slots that can support up to 64 GB capacities at speeds of up to 3200 Mbps while being compliant with the XMP 2.0 technology. It has three M.2 slots which include two Gen 4 x 4 (1 x front / 1 x back) and a single Gen 3 x 4 slot. There's also a single PCIe Gen 4 x8 slot which can be used to house a discrete GPU or an AIC.

The ERYING DIY Gaming Mini-ITX motherboard has a wealth of I/O. The motherboard offers a single VGA port that supports a maximum 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz display, two HDMI ports that support 4096 x 2160 @ 60 Hz (HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2), four USB 2.0 Type-A ports that support both USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 standards, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports supporting 5 GB/s data transmission speeds and are compatible with USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 standards, two RJ45 ports supporting internet speeds of 2.5GbE, and round out with separated line I/O and microphone audio ports.

The Erying Gaming PC motherboard with the Intel Core i7-12700H Alder Lake CPU is listed for a price of $345 US at Ali Express. The CPU has an official RCP of $502 US. The closest thing to this CPU is Intel's Core i5-13600K which has an RCP of $329 US (for the chip alone) and also features 14 cores in a 6+8 configuration with 24 MB of smart cache.

The difference is that the 13600K has an unlocked design and supports overclocking with much higher clocks and power range. But in terms of PC value, this DIY kit does seem pretty decent. The lack of CPU upgrades may turn off people but I found it to be a great option for budget builders.
