Global client CPU shipments are expected to witness a subtle quarterly drop, but the CPU markets look strong and bullish on the broader outlook.

A report from market researcher Jon Peddie Research (JPR) discloses that global consumer CPU shipments are on the right track for consistent growth. However, in the upcoming Q4 2024 quarter, the figures will see a slight decline, going down by 5% in quarter-on-quarter comparison.

While JPR hasn't disclosed the reason behind this drop, we can certainly associate it with the uncertainty in the markets, particularly with the recently emerged Intel CPU instability issues, which have confused consumers who were looking for a new product in the market.

However, despite the temporary drop, it is disclosed that the CPU markets look to grow steadily when looked at a higher time frame and that the global client CPU industry increased by 10.7% year to year, which is still a massive achievement. JPR associates the short-term drop in the market with the AI hype and how all companies are engaged in acquiring server-grade products, which is why server CPU shipments are up by 3.8% from last quarter.

The data center is still getting all the news and driving suppliers’ share price-to-earnings ratios. The client PC market has yet to find its buoyancy and continues to jump up and down but not in a predictable seasonal manner—at least not yet.

In terms of sub-divisions within the CPU segment, notebook shipments accounted for 24% of the total figure, while the rest of the portion was captured by the desktop market. In QoQ terms, desktop shipments saw a slight increase of 3%, showing that the segment is still going positive after quarters of downturn.

With next-gen AMD Ryzen 9000 series and Intel's Arrow Lake-S desktop CPUs dropping into the markets, we expect the figures to grow massively since the consumer hype around them is indeed quite high.
