Gigabyte G24F FHD 165 Hz Gaming Monitor Review – An Affordable Freesync & G-Sync Option

Gigabyte has made quite a name for itself in the gaming monitor segment over the past few years. They are offering an extensive portfolio of options in their monitor segment, both Gigabyte, & the premium AORUS offerings. Ranging from curved to ultra-fast refresh rates & sizes ranging from 24" to the top 48" big format gaming displays, they have got an option for almost everyone.

Today, we will be taking a look at Gigabyte's most entry-level solution that has been designed for the mainstream segment, the G24F. This monitor is specifically designed as a high-refresh-rate & full-HD design and marketed in the sub-$200 US market.

FHD or 1080p is currently the most common resolution used by most game streamers & eSports players. The last decade has seen a mass influx of monitors options in this category, targetting the said resolution with higher refresh rates that make the gaming experience better in online games.

On paper, the specifications for the Gigabyte G24F are as follows:

The addition of AMD Freesync which also gives this monitor G-Sync compatible certifications is a very appealing feature for most gamers.

The monitor comes in a very well packaged and sturdy cardboard box with enough packing material to survive the roughest of handling by the courier. Everything is packaged securely and the box comes with multiple connection cables, the stand, and the monitor itself.

The monitor itself has a very futuristic and gamer-esque look to it. The monitor, stand, and feet are all separate and need to be assembled manually. The whole process hardly takes 5 minutes to do so and the process doesn't require you to use any additional tools.

Looking at the front of the monitor, you can see that the bezels take up a very small room which is a good thing. The bottom of the panel has a solid bar with the Gigabyte logo and a small LED that glows white when the screen is operational and turns yellow when the screen is on standby mode.

The back of the display has a glossy black top with the Gigabyte logo, a large G24F product name on one side, and a multi-adjustment button on the other side which can be used to access the in-built configuration menu.

The stand does push the monitor out a bit so make sure you have a few inches (5.38") worth of space at your disposal if you are considering buying this monitor. A good feature of the stand is that it has a small hole at the bottom through which cables can be routed for a neater look. The whole thing weighs in at just 11.69 pounds.

The other standout feature of the stand is that it comes with both height adjustment and tilting features. The monitor can be adjusted by up to 130mm in height and -5 to +20 degrees of tilt. I would say that this is decent and not as aggressive as other options.

Coming to the bottom of the display, we have a large array of connectors which include a single DP 1.2, two HDMI 2.0 ports, an earphone jack, a USB Type-B, and dual USB 3.0 ports. There's also the AC adapter connector on the right side. The triple connector configuration makes the G24F a nice option if you are planning to use it with gaming consoles and your desktop PCs. There are no audio speakers but given the cost, that's totally acceptable since having a proper headset would end up being the better option anyways.

Coming to the display aspects and performance, particularly in gaming, the Gigabyte G24F is designed around the 1080p (FHD) segment and as such, it offers a refresh rate of 165 Hz that can be overclocked to 170 Hz. It comes with a backlight of 300 cd/m2 and a contrast ratio of 1000:1. An input lag of 4ms is reported when pushing the monitor up to 170 Hz.

At 1080p, the biggest advantage that you can get is that you will be able to utilize that higher refresh rate to its fullest considering you don't need lots of graphics horsepower to be pushing for 150-200+ FPS in the majority of eSports and competitive titles this monitor is aimed at. Compared to the standard monitors with 60 Hz, the monitor will provide an overall better playing experience.

The Gigabyte G24F does lack HDR capabilities but it comes with a 99% sRGB coverage and 82% DCI-P3 rating which means that you will end up with a vibrant viewing experience. The edge backlight on the monitor is able to hit 305 cd/m2 when dialed up to 100% and the contrast ratio peaks out at 1124:1 at 60% of the monitor's brightness. This is pretty good for an IPS panel but compared to a VA or OLED panel, these are tiny figures. There was also a slight backlight bleed that's apparent in dark scenes but besides that, the viewing experience was blur-free, and even at 1080p, the gaming experience felt good.

The Gigabyte G24F is a very decent gaming monitor with good colors and a very appealing 170Hz design which is both Freesync and G-Sync compatible. The thing that makes it more appealing is its price which is around $160-$190 US at most retailers. This makes the monitor a recommended option for gamers who are looking to enter the eSports and competitive gaming space for the first time. Pair that with an affordable graphics card such as the 6500 XT or the RTX 3050, then you are in for a gaming treat at 1080p.

It does lack behind some other options but being an IPS panel, it still managed to deliver a good gaming experience. Plus the built-in OSD is very responsive and doesn't lag at all. Overall, I would definitely recommend this monitor to the gaming audience looking for an affordable & fast display.
