Erying, the creators of several MoTD (Mobile on Desktop) motherboards has released its new Polestar series with Intel 13th Gen HX CPUs.

The motherboard manufacturer is known to utilize Intel's mobility CPUs under the "HX" and "H" series and repurpose them from the mobile segment to desktop solutions. These parts are often seen as the better value options, offering a decent motherboard and CPU combo package at very affordable price points.

The latest launch from Erying is the Polestar MoDT HX which is a brand new motherboard design featuring Intel's high-end 13th Gen Raptor Lake-HX SKUs. The motherboard comes in three CPU flavors, the top 24-core Core i9-13980HX. This chip has a total of 32 threads, a boost clock of up to 5.60 GHz, 36 MB of L3 cache, and a TDP rated at 55W base / 157W MTP. The Core i9-13900HX option is similar in core specs and just reduces the clock speeds to 5.40 GHz (max). Lastly, there's the Core i7-13700HX which is the 16-core option with 24 threads, up to 5.0 GHz clocks, 30 MB L3 cache, and the same TDP.

As for the motherboard itself, Erying seems to have upgraded the design from its previous Polestar offerings to support the higher-end Intel 13th Gen HX CPUs. The new motherboard design features the CPU embedded on the motherboard (BGA) with a large vapor chamber baseplate attached on top of it. The CPU is powered by a 10-phase VRM and receives power through an 8-pin connector.

The motherboard houses four DDR5 DIMM slots which support up to 192 GB capacities at speeds of up to 5600 MT/s (OC support XMP 3.0) and the expansion area is where things get interesting with the Erying Polestar MoTD HX offering two PCIe 4.0 x16 slots and three Gen4 M.2 slots. There are also four SATA III ports. The motherboard has all the necessary I/O such as fan headers, RGB headers, DEBUG LEDs, and even comes with dual BIOS. It is based on the higher-end H770 chipset too. Large heatsinks are seen over the VRMs, PCH & the rear panel I/O also has a pre-installed I/O plate and a top I/O cover which adds a nice touch.

In terms of I/O, the Erying Polestar MoTD HX motherboard features a single DP, two HDMI ports, four USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, a Type-C port, 2.5 GbE LAN, WIFI5 and 3-channel audio jack. There's also a clear CMOS switch on the back.

Erying has also shared some performance, thermal, and power metrics of the Polstar MoTD HX motherboard using the Intel Core i9-13900HX CPU. The CPU can be set to run around its default TDP or tuned for higher performance with unlocked TDPs of up to 260W. In AIDA64 FPU tests, the system reaches a power consumption of 350W when running with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 GPU.

The CPU can get a bit toasty as Erying was using a 360mm AIO liquid cooler and the mobility chip ended up at around 90C temps (95C max) when loaded up in the stress test. This should be kind of expected since these are essentially desktop dies repurposed for high-end mobility platforms. The following performance metrics compare the 150W mode against the 260W mode in several games and applications:

In terms of pricing, Erying's Polestar MoTD HX motherboards with the Intel 13th Gen HX CPU options are priced very well. The Intel Core i7-13700HX option starts at $270 US while the Core i9-13900HX option starts at $340 US. The 13980HX option will be priced around $370 US which is a great price considering the performance more or less matches the Core i9-13900K and you're also getting a motherboard which should cost around $150 US.

  • Erying Polestar MoTD HX (Core i9-13980HX) - 2599 RMB ($366 US)
  • Erying Polestar MoTD HX (Core i9-13900HX) - 2399 RMB ($337 US)
  • Erying Polestar MoTD HX (Core i7-13700HX) - 1899 RMB ($267 US)
  • These are great options for mainstream builders who can get a great combo package despite there being no upgrade option in the future (for the CPU).
