ASUS's ROG Ally X is shaping up to be quite the handheld with its boosted-up specs which are expected to include 24 GB LPDDR5X memory.

The newer high-end variant of ASUS's ROG Ally, the ROG Ally X, has managed to take market spotlights as insiders and leakers dig in to extract potential specifications about the handheld.

Fortunately, The Verge managed to see an early engineering sample of the ROG Ally X, disclosing further details about what to expect with it, both in terms of ergonomics & features. It's important to note that the outlet was presented with an early engineering sample that wasn't fully functional, rather it showed the overall design and aesthetics of the handheld.

According to The Verge's hands-on, the ASUS ROG Ally X handheld is an exact copy of its original variant, with the same screen size, button layout, and build structure. The only change is in the color scheme since the X model is also expected to debut in an all-black configuration. However, there were noticeable improvements in the device's grip since ASUS decided to downsize the back buttons and round the edges further. Moreover, with the larger battery size, the handheld felt to be a bit heavier as well. Following is the full breakdown by the outlet:

The ABXY face buttons feel like they’ve nudged slightly southward, closer to the analog stick, so that the B button now slightly intersects the grip

The face buttons are a little less rattle-y, though they still do pleasingly rattle

The joysticks now have a nicely tacky rubber coating in the middle, like the Steam Deck OLED — their throw felt slightly tighter, too

The D-pad now has eight-way indicators and felt very slightly floatier

The triggers maybe have a touch more throw and still have a nice smooth pull

There’s still just two back buttons

It still uses Phillips head screws

You still get RGB LED ring lights around the sticks; I couldn’t tell if they’d been added to the buttons, but they’re still double-shot

I could see through vent gaps in the chassis that there’s still a pair of fans inside

That's it for the changes made to the physical structure, and now moving on to specifications, we did do a rundown on a leak from @MysteryLupin where it was revealed that the ASUS ROG Ally X handheld will come with a higher storage of 1 TB and now it is reported to feature up to 24 GB of LPDDR5X-7500 memory as a baseline configuration. Moreover, it was also disclosed that the ROG Ally X is expected to retail for $799, which is around a $100 bump than what the standard variant goes for. The handheld is also said to offer up to 7 hours of battery life which is a really good time duration for battery.

Overall, the ASUS ROG Ally X handheld might turn out to be a decent option if you want the storage and memory upgrades, but upgrading it from an original Z1 Extreme variant won't be worthwhile for now, so I'll probably wait for a newer generation to drop in.
