Apple's A18 and A18 Pro processors, introduced in the iPhone 16 series, represent a significant leap in performance and efficiency. Both chips are built on TSMC's second-generation 3nm process, allowing Apple to increase power and reduce energy consumption compared to previous generations.
The A18, found in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, features a 6-core CPU (with two performance cores and four efficiency cores), a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine designed for improved AI and machine learning tasks. This chip boasts a 30% performance increase over the A16 Bionic, along with a 40% faster GPU and improved energy efficiency, using 35% less power. It also supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing for enhanced gaming and graphics.
The A18 Pro, powering the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, builds on this with a slightly faster 6-core CPU, a 6-core GPU, and next-gen machine learning accelerators. Apple claims the A18 Pro is 15% faster than the A17 Pro, with improved memory bandwidth and energy savings of up to 20%. The chip also supports advanced gaming features, such as real-time ray tracing and console-quality graphics.
