AMD's 5th Gen EPYC "Turin" & Instinct MI325X Accelerators will reportedly launch in October while Strix Halo & Krackan APUs will debut at CES 2025.

AMD will have several new announcements over the next few months, fueled by its next-gen Zen 5 core architecture, which has made its debut on the Ryzen AI 300 "Strix" laptops and Ryzen 9000 CPUs for desktops. The launches will cover every segment of the market from data centers, servers, laptops, and more.

According to Hoang Anh Phu, we might have an idea of when the next products will arrive. As per the details, AMD might be planning to host a special event on 10th October (10.10) where it plans to introduce its next-generation server and data center lineup. Four major products are mentioned which include Ryzen AI PRO 300 (or Strix Pro), 5th Gen EPYC "Turin" in both Classic & Dense flavors, the Instinct MI325X accelerator, and some Xilinx-related announcements which could be about new security features and technologies leveraging AI capabilities.

The AMD Ryzen AI PRO 300 series is well known now that we have spotted several chips. These chips will feature PRO technologies while retaining similar configurations as the standard Ryzen AI 300 "Strix" APUs.

The AMD 5th Gen EPYC family will feature two variants, the 128-core Zen 5 (4nm) and 192-core Zen 5C (3nm) designs, offering compatibility on existing sockets which feature up to 96 cores "Classic" and 128 cores "Dense" flavors with the prior Zen 4 generation.

Lastly, the Instinct MI325X will be a refresh of the existing MI300X accelerator, featuring up to 288 GB of HBM3E VRAM and up to 6 TB/s bandwidth. This chip will feature higher FP16/FP8 compute capabilities and will be able to support double the AI model sizes per server (even a 1 trillion parameter model). As you can tell, the 10.10 announcements are mostly aimed at the server, data center, and pro-market segment but there will be some potential teasers for the consumer side.

Some of these teasers can give us a preview of what comes next such as the CES 2025 plans that include Strix Halo and Krackan Point. The AMD Strix Halo APUs will cover the enthusiast segment with up to 16 CPU cores, 40 GPU cores, and a chiplet design while the Krackan Point APUs will be targeted at mainstream platforms with the same monolithic design but limited to 8 CPU cores and 8 GPU cores.

Following is what we know about these two upcoming platforms for laptops & gaming handhelds:

AMD Ryzen AI HX Strix Halo Expected Features:

  • Zen 5 Chiplet Design
  • Up To 16 Cores
  • 64 MB of Shared L3 cache
  • 40 RDNA 3+ Compute Units
  • 32 MB MALL Cache (for iGPU)
  • 256-bit LPDDR5X-8000 Memory Controller
  • XDNA 2 Engine Integrated
  • Up To 60 AI TOPS
  • 16 PCIe Gen4 Lanes
  • 1H 2025 Launch (Expected)
  • FP11 Platform (55W-130W)
  • AMD Ryzen AI HX Krackan Point Expected Features:

  • Zen 5 Monolithic Design
  • Up To 8 Cores (4x Zen 5 + 4x Zen 5C)
  • 16 MB of Shared L3 cache
  • 8 RDNA 3.5 Compute Units
  • LPDDR5X+DDR5 Support
  • XDNA 2 Engine Integrated
  • Up To 50 AI TOPS
  • 1H 2025 Launch
  • FP8 Platform (15W-45W)
  • AMD is also expected to use "PRO" and "MAX" monikers for its higher-end Ryzen AI 300 family with the launch of Strix APUs which will be interesting to see. So expect loads of action from AMD as it expands its Zen 5 architecture into different segments.
