AMD Shows How FSR 2 & Raytracing Are The Perfect Match For Its Radeon RX 7900 RDNA 3 GPUs

AMD has recently posted a number of benchmarks showcasing the advantage that FSR 2 offers in raytracing titles on the Radeon RX 7900 GPUs.
In a blog post titled "Maximum Ray Tracing Performance with AMD FSR 2 and AMD Radeon RX 7900 Series Graphics", the red team showcased the performance benefits that come with enabling FSR 2 in a range of raytracing titles. The list of FSR titles is definitely increasing by the day which is thanks to its very open nature and easy integration within game engines. AMD decided it was time to show its users what FSR 2 brings to the table.
For performance evaluation, AMD used a total of 12 recently released AAA games that feature ray tracing support and tested them at all quality modes that FSR 2 has to offer. With FSR 2, gamers get two things, over 60+ FPS with smooth gameplay in eSports titles and raytraced images in AAA titles where you'd otherwise have to lower settings or disable raytracing altogether to achieve a 60+ FPS target. Following are the FSR 2 presets used for testing:
(2.25x area scale) (67% screen resolution)
(2.89x area scale) (59% screen resolution)
(4x area scale) (50% screen resolution)
Another reason why this performance demo is being made is that AMD recently published a video showcasing a number of games running at 4K Ultra settings with raytracing but only with the FSR 2 "Performance" preset.
A lot of users requested AMD to post the numbers at the "Quality" preset too & while the video was technically showcasing the maximum "2x" performance that could be achieved with FSR 2's performance preset, we get why users asked to see quality preset running the same games. The Quality preset produces a far better visual representation and while the 2x performance might not be there, at least the visual fidelity is close to native resolution.
As such, we have the following numbers for AMD's FSR 2 running on the Radeon RX 7900 XTX & RX 7900 XT graphics cards.
AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX 4K Raytracing Performance With FSR 2:
AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT 4K Raytracing Performance With FSR 2:
The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX managed to offer a 2.02x boost in F1 2022 at 4K resolution in quality mode and an almost 2.5x boost in the same game when running in performance mode. The same was the case with the Radeon RX 7900 XT. With ray tracing enabled and everything cranked to high, both cards were achieving over 60 FPS in titles such as The Callisto Protocol, HITMAN, Dying Light 2, Returnal, Forspoken, Dead Space, and Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales.
In addition to these games, AMD also tested the performance of Cyberpunk 2077 with FSR 2 running at Ultra with Raytracing enabled. The game is super demanding and managed at just 21 FPS natively with the FSR 2 Quality mode doubling the FPS to 40 and Performance mode pushing it a bit further with a 2.8x gain.
Now we should remember that this isn't the new RT Overdrive mode which is far more taxing and can drop the FPS of the Radeon cards down to single digits. NVIDIA's mighty GeForce RTX 4090 delivers just 15-20 FPS without any upscaling technique and DLSS 3 has been a major support for it, pushing FPS close to 4x in the low 90s and even 100s range.
This is one of the many demonstrations of its Radeon RX 7900 XTX & 7900 XT RDNA 3 GPUs that AMD has done in recent months. The company also highlighted the VRAM advantage that its cards offer plus their value which is better than the NVIDIA RTX 40 series cards.
