AMD's Radeon RX 7900 XTX & 7900 XT GPUs seem to be the new attractions in China as the cards see surging demand after the NVIDIA RTX 4090 ban.

The ban on NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4090 as a part of the new US policies might be a blessing in disguise for AMD in the Chinese market. Ever since the ban a few weeks ago, the AMD Radeon graphics cards which include the RX 7900 XTX & 7900 XT are seeing a surge in demand which is great news for the red team.

The fact that these GPUs are often seen as an alternative to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 based on their high VRAM capacities, 24 GB & 20 GB, they are seen as good solutions for both gaming and AI purposes. However, AMD wasn't anticipating this kind of demand and as such, they now face a very big supply issue within the Chinese market. These shortages are not only expected within Q4 2023 but are also said to extend to the first quarter of 2024.

This [RTX 4090] restriction has led to a heightened demand for the AMD 7900XTX and 7900XT series, resulting in a critically scarce GPU supply situation. Ultimately, AMD is facing challenges in meeting the planned production volume for these GPUs. The issue lies in insufficient production planning by AMD, causing a severe shortage not only in the Q4 quarter but potentially extending into the first quarter of 2024, maintaining a state of scarcity.

In addition to the supply issues, an internal memo from Dell has revealed that the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is potentially prohibited from sale within the Chinese market. That should only affect the OEM segment and the Radeon RX 7900 series is mostly sold within the DIY segment so it should not be a major hindrance in terms of sales though some retailers can take advantage of this and artificially hike up the prices. In fact, the ban on RTX 4090 already caused the prices of AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX & 7900 XT GPUs to see a surge which we reported a few weeks back.

Despite all of this, NVIDIA has now devised a new solution for its Chinese audience in the form of the GeForce RTX 4090 D which is coming to the market soon. Although the card would feature cut-down specifications and lower performance than the original RTX 4090 to comply with US policies, it will still end up being a very popular solution due to NVIDIA's dominant position within China.

As for official prices, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX has a 7999 RMB MSRP while the RX 7900 XT has a 7399 RMB MSRP. That's $1130 US and $1040 US, respectively. The cards did see a huge drop early in the year but the prices have now seen a slight hike, bringing them a bit closer to the MSRP. The current shortages would only lead to further price increases in the coming months.
