AMD Radeon 780M RDNA 3 iGPU Tested: Multiple Games Tested On APU With FSR & Ray Tracing

Several AAA games have been benchmarked and tested on AMD's brand new Radeon 780M RDNA 3 iGPU which will be featured on Phoenix APUs.

The benchmarks come from tech channel, AMD APU Gaming, which is run by Twitter fellow, Tech Epiphany. The benchmarks showcase the performance of the upcoming Radeon 780M iGPU that will be featured across a range of handheld gaming consoles including the ROG Ally from ASUS. It can be seen that the laptop was configured with dual 16 GB DDR5-5600 sticks while the handheld consoles will utilize the faster LPDDR5x-7500 memory. The iGPU was featured within the Ryzen 9 7940HS which is faster than the Ryzen 7 7840U aka Ryzen Z1 Extreme and supports a faster TDP too.

The AMD Ryzen 9 7940H is the flagship of the Ryzen 7040 CPU family for laptops which arrives soon. This CPU features 8 cores, 16 threads, a base clock of 4.0 GHz, a boost clock of 5.2 GHz, a 40 MB total cache, and an integrated RDNA 3 GPU known as the Radeon 780M with 12 Compute Units operating at up to 2800 MHz. We have already seen various benchmarks of this chip here & here.

So coming to the benchmarks, we start off with the AMD Radeon 780M iGPU running Forza Horizon 5. The results are below:

  • Forza Horizon 5 720P High - 67 FPS Average
  • Forza Horzon 5 1080P High - 53 FPS Average
  • Forza Horizon 5 1440P High - 40 FPS Average
  • Forza Horizon 5 1080P Med - 64 FPS Average
  • Forza Horizon 5 1440P Med - 49 FPS Average
  • Forza Horizon 5 2160P Med - 31 FPS Average
  • Forza Horizon 5 720P High (w/RT) - 57 FPS Average
  • Forza Horizon 5 is a very optimized title on the PC platform and it also supports all upscaling tech such as AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, and NVIDIA DLSS. You can definitely get much more performance out of the game using AMD FSR or Intel XeSS modes but if you want to enjoy a native experience, then 1080P with Medium-High settings is very playable.

Moving on to the next game, we have the AMD Radeon 780M RDNA 3 iGPU running Horizon Zero Dawn. The results are below:

  • Horizon Zero Dawn 1080P High - 30-40 FPS
  • Horizon Zero Dawn 1080P High (FSR Balanced) - 45-60 FPS
  • Horizon Zero Dawn's native High preset might be a bit taxing so it's advisable to tone the settings down to Medium with a mix of High settings. With FSR though, you can definitely enjoy better GPU performance while sacrificing some visual quality. Overall, with 1080P Medium and FSR set to the quality mode, we can expect a decent gaming experience.

Next up, we have Doom Eternal which was run at 1080P with Dynamic Resolution enabled and tested with Ray tracing enabled & disabled. The results are as below:

  • Doom Eternal 1080P (Dynamic Res with Ray Tracing) - 45-50 FPS
  • Doom Eternal 1080P (Dynamic Res W/O Ray Tracing) - 60 - 75 FPS
  • Enabling ray tracing on the tiny RDNA 3 GPU can be a bit taxing so it's better to leave it off but Doom Eternal manages well over 60 FPS with a mix of High-Low settings at 1080P. This is with Dynamic Resolution enabled. There's a mod that enables FSR 2.1 with Doom Eternal & you can definitely try that out for extra performance while retaining visual fidelity with the quality mode.

Marvel's Spiderman Remastered can be a difficult game to run but it looks like the AMD Radeon 780M iGPU can definitely play it with its RDNA 3 architecture and access to FSR 2.1 delivering a somewhat playable experience. The results are as below:

  • Spiderman Remastered 1080P - 30-40 FPS
  • Spiderman Remastered 1080P (FSR 2.1 Quality)  - 35-60 FPS
  • Spiderman Remastered 1080P FSR 2.1 Ultra-Perf / Ray Tracing) - 20-35 FPS
  • This game can be played only when FSR 2.1 if you are aiming for close to 60 FPS. Ray tracing is a big no since getting close to reflective surfaces can drop the FPS down to single-digit and lock the game for several seconds before the frame is loaded.

Lastly, we have the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 which was run at both 1080p & 1440p with a mixed variety of settings. The results are as below:

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2022 1080P FXAA - 40 FPS
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2022 1080P TAA - 35 FPS
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2022 1440P - 25 FPS
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2022 1440P (85%) - 31 FPS
  • The game runs on average close to 30-40 FPS so if you want a more cinematic experience when flying from city to city than 1440p is decent enough. But extra performance will lead you to lower the settings down to 1080p which doesn't look that great unless you have the preset set to Med or High.

The most important thing is that this is an integrated GPU which is a lot more efficient than running a discrete GPU. Users can enjoy longer battery times and decent gaming performance in a majority of titles, especially with the aforementioned FSR technology. AMD is expected to launch its Phoenix Ryzen 7040 lineup soon so stay tuned.
