AMD Radeon 780M RDNA 3 iGPU On Phoenix APUs Benchmarked: Plays Cyberpunk 2077 & Many AAA Games At 1080P 60 FPS

AMD's Radeon 780M iGPU which features the RDNA 3 architecture has been shown to run several games including Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p 60 FPS.
The AMD Phoenix Laptops featuring the Ryzen 7040 APUs are coming real soon and ETA Prime got their hands on one of those laptops, the 2023 ASUS TUF A15, which houses a Ryzen 9 7940HS chip. The APU features the Zen 4 core architecture but more importantly, comes with a brand new RDNA 3 powered Radeon 780M iGPU which should offer a big boost in graphics performance.
The AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS is the flagship of the Ryzen 7040 CPU family for laptops which arrives later this quarter. This CPU features 8 cores, 16 threads, a base clock of 4.0 GHz, a boost clock of 5.2 GHz, a 40 MB total cache, and an integrated RDNA 3 GPU known as the Radeon 780M with 12 Compute Units operating at up to 2800 MHz.
We have already seen synthetic benchmarks for the AMD Radeon 780M iGPU but it's time we focus on the gaming benchmarks. The laptop features 32 GB of DDR5-5200 memory which was tuned to run at DDR5-5600 and running a stress test such as Furmark revealed that the GPU on the chip was pulling around 45W of power. Since it's stressing the GPU, gaming workloads should manage power between the CPU and GPU.
In 3DMark Time Spy, the CPU scored 11,453 points whereas the GPU scored 2830 points which are expected of the chip without any overclocking and the 45W power limit. Once again, with a little bit of tuning, the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS and its Radeon 780M iGPU can easily achieve a score of over 3K points in 3DMark's Time Spy graphics test.
Starting with the games, we have CSGO running at 1080p High at over 100 FPS and going in the 150+ range. GTA V at 1080p and very high settings average around 60-70 FPS through the dense city blocks while Forza Horizon 5 at 1080p High settings yields over 60 FPS and hits close to 100 FPS. Fortnite at 1080p Medium also sits above 70 FPS with Doom Eternal yielding a very playable 70+ FPS at 1080p Medium.
We also get to see some AMD FSR 1.0 performance numbers of the Radeon 780M RDNA 3 iGPU which scores around 106 FPS on average at 1080p using the FSR "Performance" mode in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.
In Cyberpunk 2077, ETA Prime was able to make the AMD Radeon 780M RDNA 3 iGPU run at its previously intended 3 GHz clock speeds through a 3rd party APU tuning utility, he was able to get the clocks back to those speeds. The integrated GPU ran the game well above 60 FPS at 1080p with a mix of low and medium settings without the use of FSR but we can expect even more visual and performance optimizations using FSR.
Following is the average performance achieved throughout the games tested above (Credits: ETA Prime):
The most important thing is that this is an integrated GPU which is a lot more efficient than running a discrete GPU. Users can enjoy longer battery times and decent gaming performance in a majority of titles, especially with the aforementioned FSR technology. AMD is expected to launch its Phoenix Ryzen 7040 lineup soon within this month so stay tuned.
