AMD Pushes Out Zen 5 Patches At Linux, New CPU Models Added To Kernel

AMD Ryzen 9000 Desktop CPUs Launching In 16, 12, 8 & 6 Core Flavors, Retail Availability In July 1

Linux has received a new patch from AMD engineers, targeting the next-gen Zen 5 CPU architecture by including new model IDs for anticipated processors in the lineup.

As we near the launch of AMD's upcoming Zen 5 CPU lineup, engineers have started hastening up their work on Linux to ensure complete, stable support on launch. Phoronix reports that the AMD kernel patch appeared in the Linux 6.9 kernel, which was targeted at providing a wide range of model IDs, likely designated to the Zen 5 processors. The patch did appear with a Zen 5 tag, leaving no ambiguity on what it was designed for.

For those unaware, AMD's Zen 5 CPU lineup is labeled as "Family 26" or "Family 1Ah" in the kernel. We have seen support for several Zen 5 processors, including models such as 0 to 15, 32 to 47, and 64 to 79, with their respective model IDs. With the new patch, Linux has also gained support for 112 to 127 model IDs, which shows that Team Red added new processor support into the Linux kernel.

However, it is essential to note that these model IDs are mere numbers in front of us, and we can't estimate what they represent. The firm doesn't need to assign all these model IDs to Zen 5 SKUs; some will be left out. We know that the architecture will be adopted by several CPU families such as EPYC Turin, Ryzen "Granite Ridge", Ryzen "Fire Range", Ryzen "Strix Point", Ryzen "Kraken Point" & more.

In other Zen 5 developments, Gigabyte recently validated the existence of the Ryzen 9000 series through a press release that mentioned the lineup's name. It was disclosed that Gigabyte will support AMD Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" Desktop CPUs on its AM5 motherboards, including X670, B650, and A620 series products, which is exciting to witness. Regarding the release date, AMD's Zen 5 CPUs could drop by somewhere after Computex 2024 since that's where the grand unveiling could probably be. Hence, you can expect market availability by July-August, but this isn't official yet.
