AMD Navi 32 “RDNA 3” GPU Package Pictured, Supports Navi 31 GPU Die With Six MCDs In Compact Form Factor

Brand new pictures of AMD's Navi 32 GPU package have been obtained by Moore's Law is Dead which holds a Navi 31 RDNA 3 GPU die.
AMD's Navi 32 GPU was accidentally leaked in a video published by Forbes which showed a slightly more compact GPU package housing the Navi 32 GCD and four MCDs. Now we have new pictures of the same package but this time, instead of using the Navi 32 design, the chip houses a Navi 31 GPU.
In a picture leaked by Moore's Law is Dead, we can see that the same package seen in the Navi 32 GPU leak houses the Navi 31 GPU. The Navi 31 GCD can be seen in the middle which measures the same 304.35mm2 and the six MCDs for a 529mm2 die size. But the main difference is that the Navi 31 GPU is fitted within a much more compact package measuring just 40x40mm whereas the stock Navi 31 package measures 55x47.5mm2. That's a 39% reduction in package area and we'll get to it in a second why that's so interesting.
MLID explains that AMD sent out Navi 31 RDNA 3 GPU dies in Navi 32 packages to its partners to evaluate thermal testing before even Navi 32 was ready. The GPU also features two dummy MCD dies which means that this Navi 31 GPU is essentially a 256-bit bus design and not the full 384-bit or even the cut-down 320-bit design like the 7900 XT. So this chip can be very similar to the Radeon Pro W7800 in terms of design but that too uses the standard Navi 31 package albeit with two MCD dies disabled.
We can see that there are at least two GDDR6 memory dies on the PCB and it could be used to test an ES Radeon RX 7800 XT graphics card. We believe that the card would end up with at least eight GDDR6 dies which would allow for a 256-bit bus interface and a 16 GB VRAM. Now why this Navi 31 package is interesting due to the fact that a similar die can be used for high-end laptop GPUs in the future. For example, we know that AMD will eventually bring Navi 32 to GPUs in the 7800 series range but there might even be a possibility that AMD could just swap the Navi 32 GPU die on the same package with a Navi 31 die and offer it as a high-end Radeon RX 7900M XT with 16 GB VRAM for laptops.
This would allow AMD to compete with NVIDIA in the high-end space and may even end up being very competitive against the GeForce RTX 4080. Nothing is set in stone for now but it will be a nice thing to see AMD back in the high-end laptop space which NVIDIA dominates for now. MLID also states that Navi 32 is expected to launch in September and will come in very competitive prices as the RX 7800 XT and more options.
