AMD CPUs Retain Dominance On Linux Platforms, Trails Behind Intel in Windows OS

Steam Hardware Survey has shown that AMD CPUs are in the lead versus Intel when it comes to market share in Linux Gaming systems.

According to the statistics released by Steam's Hardware Survey for the month of June, the share of AMD CPUs in Linux systems has increased by around 7.6%, reaching a total of 67.15% share. Intel comes behind AMD in Linux, with a market share of 32.84%. Well, the reason behind the inclination of Linux consumers towards AMD is the company's commitment to open-source technologies.

One well-known example is AMD's open-source GPU drivers (AMDGPU & AMDKFD), part of the Linux kernel, which the company continuously updates and improves. Moreover, AMD's ROCm (Radeon Open Compute) platform is also an open software platform for users to support HPC and machine learning.

AMD's share in Linux systems has been growing for the last six years, and is the dominant vendor in the ecosystem, mainly due to the company's offerings. However, things are entirely different on the Windows OS side, with Intel leading the race. The statistics revealed that Intel has the lion's share of 68%, whereas AMD is limited to 32%. This vast disparity is entirely due to Intel's market presence compared to AMD and performance gaps in some scenarios.

AMD has been growing its presence in the Linux community, although it still lacks behind in Windows, which is a much bigger platform. 96.77% of Steam's user base is on Windows while 1.79% and 1.44% share belongs to OSX and Linux. No one can deny that Windows is the gamer choice and has seen its share increase over the past several years. While Windows 10 remains on the top, Windows 11 is quickly gaining and currently sits at 35.75% share versus 59.43% share for the previous OS.
